The first vision aid ever invented was called a reading stone, and was created around 1000 AD for the far-sighted. It was a glass sphere, and in a way, it acted somewhat like a magnifying glass. You would put it on top of your writing, the sphere would magnify the letters and thus help you see them! I am glad we have so far...I love our eyewear.

The Importance of Eyeglasses

If you’re finding it hard to see clearly, it may be time for a pair of eyeglasses. We use our eyes all the time, from the time we wake up until we go to sleep at night, we watch, read and perceive objects. This is why it is essential to choose the perfect pair of glasses for yourself, as whatever you do, they will be helping you see.

Visiting an ophthalmologist or optometrist as soon as you notice blurred or distorted vision can help you avoid eyestrain and headaches and can help you improve your performance at work or school.

VISION PROBLEMS CORRECTED BY GLASSES

Myopia (nearsightedness) is a vision condition in which close objects are seen clearly, but objects farther away appear blurred. Nearsightedness occurs if the eyeball is too long or the cornea, the clear front cover of the eye, has too much curvature. As a result, the light entering the eye isn’t focused correctly and distant objects look blurred.
Astigmatism (uneven focusing of light) a vision condition that causes blurred vision due either to the irregular shape of the cornea, the clear front cover of the eye, or sometimes the curvature of the lens inside the eye. An irregular shaped cornea or lens prevents light from focusing properly on the retina, the light sensitive surface at the back of the eye. As a result, vision becomes blurred at any distance.
Hyperopia (farsightedness) is a vision condition in which distant objects are usually seen clearly, but close ones do not come into proper focus. Farsightedness occurs if your eyeball is too short or the cornea has too little curvature, so light entering your eye is not focused correctly.

Just because you're a Woman of a Certain Age who wears glasses, you are not doomed to bifocals, glasses hung from chains around the neck and the pastel frames you bought for $40 back in 1988. Pick the right eyeglasses and frames and you could actually shave years off your look. Pick the wrong ones (or stick with the dated look you've adopted) and you can add years to your look.

In this slideshow, I share my favorite tips and tricks for choosing the right glasses for you, starting with Rule No. 1: black frames are universally flattering. Put a bad frame on magazine editor Evelina Khromchenko, pictured here, and she could actually look frumpy. But the frames she's chosen tell us she's a classy, sophisticated woman who follows fashion trends. The frames are over-sized and a bit cat-eye and look great on her. To get away with this look, keep jewelry and other accessories to a minimum.

The trendiest glasses frames at the moment are made by Sjon Reykjavik. Check out the www.sjonreykjavik.com website.
