Wow. Tonight I got to watch Rosemead (), an independent film inspired by true events about a Taiwanese immigrant mother—beautifully portrayed by —learning how to love and support her son () through his struggle with schizophrenia. The film captures the complex layers of shame, isolation, stigma, despair, and deep love with so much care. This is a story that will stay with me for a long time.
I grew up just 15–20 minutes from Rosemead, and I’ve worked closely with individuals living with schizophrenia and other complex mental health conditions. I know firsthand how painful it can be to watch someone you love suffer. I was honored to participate in the post-screening Q&A to answer questions about mental health and to speak to the unique challenges faced within the Asian community.
Stories like this matter. They help break silence, reduce stigma, and remind us that compassion—especially in the face of fear and misunderstanding—can be life-changing.
