The Cannabis Use Prevention Summit was hosted by the Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School & University of St. Thomas earlier this month in St. Paul. We shared critical information and useful tools to support K-12 and undergraduate educators, behavioral health clinicians, government agency employees, parents and the public.
Cannabis is officially mainstream, joining alcohol and to***co as the most accessible and socially accepted mood-altering substances in America.
With the drug now legalized for recreational use in 24 states, the risks are omnipresent for young people, who are being influenced by advertising and other public messages that portray the drug as benign or helpful. As this new reality sets in, it’s increasingly important for people with a role in young people’s lives to adopt strategies that minimize risks, reduce harms and help those hurt by cannabis use.

Providing effective supervision is critical in safeguarding the well-being of clients and the future of the addiction counseling profession. In addition to being a rewarding endeavor, supervising counselors-in-training also brings many challenges. Patients often feel embarrassed discussing s*x, yet it is a vital part of adult life. Developing emotional vulnerability in recovery is essential, and this includes in s*xual matters. This training aims to strengthen the clinical relationship and address barriers in having conversations about s*x. Barriers such as, lack of knowledge in the integrated concern with s*x and substance use, counselor discomfort, societal taboos, and ethical concerns about discussing this sensitive topic. Cultural differences further complicate the conversation and will be addressed in this CEU. It is vital to know that avoiding the topic of s*x in recovery can be detrimental to the patient’s experience in treatment and recovery. It is important to validate discussions about s*x and recognize patient needs to provide appropriate space in the therapeutic setting and as well as safe outside resource recommendations.

Margaret Gerty graduated from Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School in 2023 and is from Lindstrom, MN. More details on the conference at https://www.marrch.org/page/annual-conference
