Alongside Moira work two incredible nurses!

Heather Durney (BSN, RN) is a mom to six beautiful children. After her fifth child was born, Heather fulfilled her dream of becoming a nurse. She began working in emergency and intensive care, growing her skills in the midst of critical situations. Before becoming a nurse, she was a certified doula and knew her heart belonged in birth work. Now, as a nurse for Rooted In Love Midwifery, Heather is able to help women feel safe and heard while achieving the births they desire.

Rivka Levin (BSN, RN) began her midwifery training in 2006 after working as a nurse in internal medicine and ICU. After graduating, she worked as a hospital midwife for six years in Israel, where she was born and raised. Since moving to the US, she has worked as a nurse in research, infertility, and labor and delivery, eventually returning to the midwifery model of care. Rivka was introduced to home birth by a professor and she quickly came to love the holistic approach— so much so that she chose to give birth to her own children at home.

Together, these three birth professionals bring many years of experience— professionally, and personally through their own birthing and mothering journeys!

After several hours in the Swanson family home, Midwife Moira Weitz crouched at the edge of the bed in the main bedroom. Weitz was advising soon-to-be father James Swanson on how to catch his baby while another midwife supported Megan Swanson through her final contractions. Once the healthy baby boy...

Meet the Midwives: Introducing, Allie!

Hi, I'm Allie, born and raised in the Cedar Rapids area. My husband, Matt, and our three children fill our rural home with love, laughter, and loads of laundry! We spend most of our time homeschooling, working on our fixer-upper home, enjoying the outdoors, and growing our faith.

After earning my Bachelor's degree with high honors from Clarke College in Dubuque, IA in 2010, I began my career as a registered nurse. Since then, I have worked in post-surgery, an OBGYN clinic, and mostly hospital labor and delivery. I graduated with a Master's Degree of Science of Nursing from Frontier Nursing University in 2019 and was then licensed as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) and a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) by the Iowa Board of Nursing.

Through my experiences as a women's health nurse, I discovered a love for serving families. Then, Moira and I met in 2017 and became great friends. I am often seeking her expertise advice on gardening, shopping local, natural medicine, and getting those babies to rotate! She invited me to a home birth - a first for me. What a beautiful and captivating birth that was! I had years of hospital birth experience, but after this home birth, I knew home is where my heart is. Being a guardian of life's greatest and most intimate miracle is such an honor and a blessing.

As a CNM and an ARNP, I am a licensed independent practitioner who can practice medicine in Iowa. Beyond home births, I serve women of all ages starting at puberty as well as newborns in their first 28 days. I respect nature and hold firm to the position that menarche, menstruation, pregnancy, birth, and menopause seldom require intervention. I encourage natural, alternative, and complimentary therapies. I will provide evidence-based care including medical recommendations, physician/specialist referrals, laboratory/imaging, and medications as needed. It is important to me that you are informed, educated, and supported in your healthcare needs so you can make the best decision that suits you.

I am looking forward to encouraging you!

Meet the Midwives: Introducing, Moira!

Hello and welcome! You can pronounce my name two different ways. The traditional Gaelic pronunciation is "Moy-ra," but I was born and raised in New York, and my family called me "Moor-ah." I love both pronunciations, so take your pick!

My path to midwifery and natural medicine started in 1993 when I began studying herbs and homeopathic modalities. In 1994, I gave birth to my first child at home, attended by midwives. From there, I went on to have six more home births. During this time, I became a midwife through a traditional apprenticeship and, in 2005, I began practicing as a primary midwife. In 2012, I obtained by Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) credential in order to serve women abroad. I visited rural Philippines to assess the need for maternity services and education. It is my hope to someday return.

After my trip to the Philippines, I earned my Bachelor's Degree of Science in Nursing from the University of Cincinnati and I am currently a registered nurse. I love having a multi-modal approach that enables me to serve women in a way that can be tailored to each individual, and with greater options.

Another area where I love to give support is breastfeeding. I breastfed my babies for 16 years in total, weaning between 18 months and 4 years. In 2017, I began work as a hospital labor and delivery nurse. I also fill in as the Lactation Consultant. I have been able to walk alongside breastfeeding mothers with a variety of difficulties. I am honored to help empower them to overcome challenges and am rewarded to see them succeed. I am in the process of becoming an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).

Spending time with my family is my favorite activity. I also love gardening, hiking, camping, cooking, and baking. Feeding people is my love language! Teaching Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) to other midwives and healthcare workers is an enjoyable way to keep my skills sharp. On occasion, I have the privilege to volunteer as a nurse at His Hands Clinic in downtown Cedar Rapids.

My passion is to serve all families with love, respect, and compassion. I am committed to equipping you with information so that you can make informed decisions. I am excited to partner with my friend and colleague, Allie. It is not often that you find that person who you can trust in times where quick action is needed and she is one of those people. Knowing that we are aligned in our desire to serve women and families with competent and gentle care makes our partnership even more exciting.

I look forward to an opportunity to work with you on your birth and postpartum journey!
