PLEASE SHARE: Seeking support is a clear indication of courage, NOT weakness, as pure guts are required to be able to place all of this on the table of mental health services. Invisible wounds are unquestionably the most painful of all and unnecessary suffering is just that. No good comes from it. Bring an end to living as an alien on our own planet. Step out of the shroud of darkness, as living in the shadows is often a choice.

The psychological injuries sustained in war have no expiration date. These wounds that do not bleed are often terminal, infusing veterans with a lifetime of unspeakable and harrowing struggles, for which there is no end in sight and for which no salve exists.

Although my original home is in upstate New York and Ohio has apparently adopted me, it is an incredible honor to serve so many Veterans and first responders in the Miami Valley/Southwest Ohio communities. This is a blessing that has allowed me to carry on after 4 deployments and walking out of the Fort Hood Massacre alive. I get to give back for having survived.

“What they carry with them after an officer-involved shooting is just immeasurable, tragic. The self-blame, the guilt, the anxiety,” Psychologist Dr. Kathy Platoni said.

Officer-involved situations often have a lot of social and political overtones, Platoni said, adding police basically go through public opinion trials before they get a chance to deal with the emotional fallout.

“You can’t be prepared for this. You can go through every scenario imaginable in your training, but everyone is different,” she said.

It’s why officers involved in shootings need counseling from psychologists like Platoni. They also need support from their own departments.

Our fall issue can only be described as gripping, not just from the perspective of a wounded Veteran of Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines, 4th Marine Division, the United States Marine Corp, but from the viewpoints and experiences of heroes from all walks of First Responders and the clinicians that support them.

"The Fort Hood massacre is still not considered a domestic act of terrorism after almost 16 years which is the ultimate betrayal and many of the families of the fallen the wounded and the survivors have never gotten the benefits they are due," Dr. Platoni said.

Dr. Platoni lost five of her friends that day, she explained that she was Hasan's direct supervisor and now lives with survivors guilt.

"I live with tremendous survivor guilt because I was supposed to be the shooters direct supervisor, and as a full bird colonel I was at the top of his hit list so I live with the knowledge that somebody else got the rounds meant for me," Dr. Platoni said.

“In the wake of tragedy” is something that occurs daily, even hourly, for law enforcement officers. The colossal amount of chaos, upheaval, horror, and trauma to which they are exposed exacts an incalculable toll on the psyche of these most bona fide heroes.

Saving their souls is the subject matter of one of the very most innovative and groundbreaking treatment approaches designed to diminish the impact of the emotional scarring and emotional devastation to which they are endlessly exposed, a growing problem of increasingly massive proportions over time.

The runaway success of the Restoration and Recovery Station: Support for First Responders During Mass Casualties, Natural Disasters and Civil Unrest by Drs. Sneha Shankar, Eamonn Arble, and Maurice Gardner is unquestionably, an absolute state of the art program that demands adoption across the land in the face of an alarming uptick in all things violent in the law enforcement community.

"In the 15 years since, nothing has changed. The Fort Hood Massacre is still considered an act ofworkplace violence and not a mass shooting. My efforts to overturn this have resulted in directthreats to cease and desist by two elected officials. Letters to former presidents have been sentback by the Secret Service “because they couldn’t be vetted.” There have now been ten morelives lost as a result of the heinous acts of the shooter, those “Killed After Action” by su***deamong the survivors, the wounded, and the families of the fallen. Survivor guilt impales the soulsof those who were spared, ghastly memories permanently etched in their brains."

November remains a minefield of anguish and horror. There have now been 15 such painful anniversaries. It was Nov. 5, 2009 when life changed in inconceivable ways.

"The dawn of each new calendar brings with it an accounting of what happened in the last. For Service Members and Veterans, it is too often about the incalculable deaths of innocents that were never avenged and the defeat of an enemy left unfinished. If it wasn’t the war, it was the killing of souls in its aftermath. And too, death is so cunning when it comes about by unnatural means in those Killed After Action by their own hands."
