The first Earth Day didn’t start as a holiday, it started as a wake-up call.
After the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill, Senator Ga***rd Nelson knew something had to change. He joined forces with Pete McCloskey and a young organizer, Denis Hayes, to turn concern into action.
On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans showed up, not quietly, but together. That moment helped spark the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and some of the most important environmental protections we have today.
It proved something simple: when people care, things change.
