As we continue honoring Black History Month, we recognize Dr. Bernice Catherine Harper, a visionary pioneer in hospice and palliative care who passed just two years ago.

Dr. Harper broke barriers as one of the first Black women to earn a Master of Science in Public Health from Harvard University and dedicated her career to expanding compassionate end-of-life care. Her advocacy helped shape the Medicare hospice benefit, increasing access to hospice services for millions of Americans.

She also championed equity in care, founding efforts to improve hospice access in underserved communities and supporting the growth of hospice services in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Dr. Harper’s legacy is one of courage, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to dignity for all at the end of life.

Black History Month is a time to honor the pioneers who changed lives🖤✨

Today, we honor Dr. Robert Lee Brown, whose vision and compassion helped bring hospice care to Black communities when such care was rarely available. In 1977, he created a hospice program in Harlem centered on dignity, trust, and culturally sensitive end-of-life care for African Americans.

As we reflect on his work, we’re reminded of the importance of equitable hospice and palliative care. Dr. Brown’s legacy emphasizes that hospice care should be accessible, compassionate, and culturally aware, ensuring comfort and respect for every individual, no matter their background.
