How Are Bunions Treated?

Before considering surgery, your doctor will see if he can do anything to relieve your pain nonsurgically. Which may include:

• Wearing bunion shields
• Switching your shoes
• Wearing orthotics
• Applying ice regularly
• Taking anti-inflammatory medications

If these alternative measures don’t work, it might be time for a permanent solution. Depending on the severity of your condition, you may need to have some of the swollen tissue from your big toe joint removed. If your bunion is more complex, your big toe may need to be straightened your by removing some of your bone. Your doctor may also have to realign your bones so that your big toe sits straight naturally. If you have bunions and experiencing pain of any kind, call Centreville Foot & Ankle Clinic today to schedule an appointment.

Common Questions You May Have About Shoes.

There are so many shoe options to choose from, making it difficult to know which ones are okay to wear and which may actually cause damage to your feet. For example, did you know it's generally a good idea to avoid pointed shoes which can cause can cause debilitating neuromas or bursitis and aggravate bunions. Ballet flats often lack arch support, which can be remedied with shoe inserts, while thong sandals typically offer no arch support at all and can't be remedied with shoe inserts. If you are unsure of what shoes are okay or should be avoided altogether, speak with your doctor.

3 Things You're Doing That Cause Foot Pain.

Here are three common things people do that cause them to have foot pain; wearing worn out sneakers. This can wreck havoc on your feet as shoes with worn out soles can alter your body mechanics causing you to compensate and lead to conditions like plantar fasciitis. A second thing people commonly do that hurt their feet is avoid wearing orthotics because they don't like the way those shoes look or just don't go through the effort of putting them in their shoes. Finally, women who wear high heels frequently will often cause damage to their feet due to the way it squishes their toes which creates bunions.

The Best Solutions for Plantar Fasciitis.

When it comes to plantar fasciitis, it's best if you can try to avoid this condition altogether. You can try to avoid developing this condition by maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding damaging, repetitive activity and replacing old worn out shoes. However, if you are not successful in avoiding this condition or have already been diagnosed with it, there are some home remedies you can try. Home remedies include stretching, doing an ice massage with a frozen water bottle, wearing night splints and using shoe inserts. If home remedies are unsuccessful in alleviating pain, you should speak with your doctor for alternative treatment options.

What to Do About Bunions.

If you have bunions the first thing you should do is take a look at your shoes, since wearing the wrong shoes is often the biggest reason bunions develop. All of your shoes should have a wide and flexible sole. Shoes should also have enough room in the toe box for the bunion, but keep your heel in place. Those who have bunions should try to avoid wearing shoes with a heel high than one inch. If you have painful bunions and the above suggestions are not helping, you can try to make your foot more comfortable in your shoes with bunion pads.

What Is Achilles Tendonitis?

Achilles tendonitis is the official name for a strained calf. You’re basically just stressing the soft tissues below your knee, down the back of your leg. When the tendon that connects your calf muscles to your heel bone become inflamed and injured, you’ll feel pain. Usually Achilles tendonitis is most common in runners who suddenly switch their routine and increase their intensity. But it can also happen if you play basketball, tennis, or another sport that requires you to change the intensity of your runs — especially if you don’t warm up and cool down properly. If you are experiencing ankle pain of any kind, call Centreville Foot & Ankle Clinic today to schedule an appointment.

How to Know If You May Be a Good Candidate for Bunion Surgery.

The best way to determine if you're a good candidate for bunion surgery is by speaking with your doctor and getting a proper diagnosis. However, typically people who are good candidates for bunion surgery are those who experience significant foot pain that limits their normal activities, along with inflammation and swelling that doesn't go away with rest, medication or after switching to properly fitting footwear. People who are good candidates for surgery typically have a toe deformity where the big toe begins to move in and crowd their other toes, some may experience an inability to straighten or bend their big toe.
