Cahaba Family Medicine Residency

Cahaba Family Medicine Residency The Cahaba Family Medicine Residency is a 4-4-4 program focused on preparing family medicine residents to serve the underserved. Program Director is John B.

Family Medicine Residency Program focused on real-life mentored holisitic and procedurally-oriented family medicine education and training in a rural, urban or international setting. This is a mentorship based, procedurally robust opportunity for real-life practice experience as a “junior partner” in order to better prepare for a career in primary care medicine in rural, urban, or international settings. Residents have the opportunity to interact and treat a full-spectrum of patients from newborn to end-of-life, for both chronic diseases as well as preventive care and population health, and including family-centered maternity care and obstetrics, as well as the full-spectrum of procedures needed in rural and international settings. The clinic and hospital are located in Centreville, Alabama, in Bibb County. The city is bisected by the Cahaba River, the longest free-flowing waterway in Alabama, and surrounded on the southwest and northeast by the Talledega National Forest. The city is also centrally located an hour or less to three major Alabama cities and airports, and within a half-days’ drive of the best weekend getaways the Deep South has to offer. The area offers an ideal quality of life. A heritage rich in history and arts, an abundance of natural resources, lower than average cost of living, a demand for academic excellence, and a passion for sports – all combined with southern hospitality, makes for an ideal place to call home. What a fantastic and productive week for our Family Medicine Residency administrative team at the AAFP Residency Leadership Summit (RLS) in Dallas, TX! 🌟

They spent several days collaborating, learning, and bringing back cutting-edge ideas to strengthen our program. Highlights included discussions on the “Innovation Showcase,” exploring how to use AI for enhancing resident evaluations and strategies for improving resident continuity and well-being.

We can’t wait to see these new ideas implemented to better serve our residents and patients! Great work, team! 👏

This week on UAB MedWest FMIS, we’ve got a rare all-guys team on inpatient service — so we had to snap a quick photo! 📸

Our inpatient service at UAB MedWest provides invaluable hands-on training for our residents, strengthening their skills in acute inpatient care, complex case management in the ICU, teamwork, and continuity of care. From admissions to discharges, this experience helps shape confident, compassionate physicians who are prepared to care for patients in every setting.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to train, grow, and serve — both in the hospital and beyond. 🙌🏼

Our Cahaba-UAB Highlands residents (Dr. Nguyen & Dr. Suhaila) alongside UAB Sports Medicine Fellows (Dr. Ambrozy & Dr. Hanna) and Sports Medicine Attendings (Dr. McKeag, Dr. Carrasco & Dr. Grijalba) in Kumari, Nepal.

An incredible mission trip centered on giving back. Building a medical camp, donating a point of care ultrasound device, and sharing hands-on POCUS expertise, all while learning from and connecting with the local community.

Proud to represent Cahaba–UAB Family Medicine at STFM.

We shared our 4-week Pathway Program (funded by the state rural health board) that places UAB MS2 students side-by-side with rural family docs. It’s all about early exposure, mentorship, and showing what rural FM actually looks like day to day. And it’s making a difference, more students are walking away genuinely interested in Family Medicine, especially rural practice.

Not just an elective. This is a pipeline for future rural physicians where they’re needed most
