April is Alcohol Awareness month. Many individuals who struggle with alcoholism and substance abuse often underestimate the amount they drink, the duration of their drinking problem, the effects it has had on their lives, or overestimate their ability to control their drinking or to quit. In 2018, an estimated 14.4 million American adults had an alcohol use disorder according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Each year, approximately 88,000 people die due to alcohol-related causes. As pharmacists, we are the most accessible healthcare worker to the general public, and we can make an impact to help patients who have alcohol use disorder. During our Annual Wellness Visits and chronic care management, our pharmacists perform alcohol use screenings regularly with our patients to monitor drinking status and identify inappropriate alcohol use. We work closely with our patients and providers to get patients the care they need to help improve their overall health.
