Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills. In most people with Alzheimer’s, symptoms first appear as they get older. Worldwide, more than 55 million people are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia. Even though there is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s, medications are emerging to slow the progression of the disease. Pharmacists can play an important role in the detection of cognitive impairment in patients by performing routine cognitive assessments such as the Mini-Cog or Cognivue assessments. We can screen patients and make appropriate referrals to primary care providers for early detection of this disease.

April is STI Education and Awareness Month. Our pharmacists help protect our patients by having open discussions about sexual health during Annual Wellness Visits and chronic care management services. This is an important, and often overlooked, area of health that is surrounded by stigma and frequently avoided. We work to educate our patients on the importance of all aspects of health, and we seek to provide fully comprehensive care with our services.

April is Alcohol Awareness month. Many individuals who struggle with alcoholism and substance abuse often underestimate the amount they drink, the duration of their drinking problem, the effects it has had on their lives, or overestimate their ability to control their drinking or to quit. In 2018, an estimated 14.4 million American adults had an alcohol use disorder according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Each year, approximately 88,000 people die due to alcohol-related causes. As pharmacists, we are the most accessible healthcare worker to the general public, and we can make an impact to help patients who have alcohol use disorder. During our Annual Wellness Visits and chronic care management, our pharmacists perform alcohol use screenings regularly with our patients to monitor drinking status and identify inappropriate alcohol use. We work closely with our patients and providers to get patients the care they need to help improve their overall health.

In November 2022, our clinical pharmacist fellows participated in the Davos Alzheimer’s Collaborative Grant Cognivue Study. Davos Alzheimer’s Collaborative is an organization which strives to end Alzheimer’s disease, and they funded a study to see the impact that community pharmacists can make in access to care for early screening of cognitive impairment using the Cognivue Clarity Device. Cognivue is the world’s first FDA-cleared computerized test of cognitive function. It is a 10-minute self administered test that evaluates 6 cognitive domains and 2 speed performance parameters. While completing this study, our clinical pharmacists were able to test and identify patients who are showing signs of cognitive impairment and refer them to their providers for further assessment. This is just one of the many ways our clinical pharmacists highlight innovation in community pharmacy.
