At the Lantern, we believe that there is hope here and we are committed to helping ensure that our residents remain as independent as possible, the the best quality of life for each day. Svayus is Sanskrit for "life with vigor". The objective of the Svayus program is to identify the activities of daily living (dressing, grooming, toileting, eating, etc.) and tasks that the resident can and is able to do. The program is designed to strengthen the existing residual cognition and ADL functions, thereby stimulating the initiation and development of lost functions. Muscle memory can play a role here as our muscles may retain the "memory" of the familiar movements of our daily activities such as ADLs. Central to our mission is connecting our residents with the natural elements that they are exposed to and familiar with since birth and ensuring a structured routine filled with positive meaningful stimulation from their immediate surrounding environment. We incorporate sensory stimulation via sight, smell, sound, touch and taste. At the Lantern, we have many live plants throughout the campus along with four enclosed courtyards that are beautifully landscaped, including resident garden areas. The environment plays a large part in helping to stimulate memory as to the time of day and human psychological clock, thus promoting function, purpose and well-being. Decline happens when we stop nurturing the human spirit through meaningful connection. Our robust activity calendar offers many opportunities for residents to connect with one another, family, staff and the community. Even amidst the challenges of COVID restrictions, we do all that we can to help our residents maintain their connections to others and the outside world. We offer Skype and Facetime visits, Window visits, Outdoor Porch Visits, Tele-medicine appointments and utilize technology to bring concerts, tours, etc. via Zoom.
