Meet Alyssa Leister, MA: Primary Therapist

Alyssa has a gift for being both deeply empathetic and refreshingly direct. She creates structure wrapped in compassion, and she’s especially passionate about working with women navigating the complexities of boundaries and relationships.

What sets Alyssa apart is her curiosity. She doesn’t come with pre-made answers; she comes with thoughtful questions that help you discover your own truth.

At the office we love the dry sense of humor, random acts of kindness and depth of care for colleagues and clients.

Addiction doesn’t just affect one person—it impacts entire families. Parents, siblings, partners, and children often carry invisible burdens: the worry that never quite goes away, the grief of watching someone struggle, the confusion about what to say or do next.

That’s why we created Family Support Night.

Every 4th Thurs of the month we open our doors to families navigating the complexities of loving someone with substance use disorder. Whether your loved one is in treatment with us, receiving care elsewhere, actively using, in recovery, or somewhere in between—you’re welcome here.

**What happens at Family Support Night?**

This isn’t a lecture or a program you have to complete. It’s a space where families can:

- Connect with others who truly understand what you’re going through
- Learn practical strategies for communication and boundaries
- Ask questions in a judgment-free environment
- Process your own feelings with compassionate guidance
- Find community among people who get it

Led by our Livensed Marriage and Family Therapist Clincial Director and a member of our Masters level Clinical Team, these evenings blend education, support, and honest conversation. Some nights focus on specific topics like enabling versus helping, managing crisis situations, or taking care of yourself. Other nights, we follow where the group needs to go.

**You don’t have to be a Sunlight client family to attend.**

We believe recovery happens in community, and families need support regardless of where their loved one is—or isn’t—getting help. There’s no pressure to share if you’re not ready, and confidentiality is paramount.

Loving someone with addiction is one of the hardest things a person can experience. You don’t have to do it alone. All are welcome

From childhood, men learn: “Be strong.” “Man up.” “Don’t show weakness.”

These messages create powerful barriers:

• Vulnerability feels like failure
• Fear of being seen as weak or incapable
• Shame about struggling in the first place
• The belief that “I should handle this alone”

But here’s the truth: **Seeking help IS strength.** It takes courage to face pain rather than bury it.

You are not alone. You are not the only one. Healing is possible.

Our Men’s Trauma program at Sunlight Wellness & Recovery creates a judgment-free space where men can heal without sacrificing their sense of strength.

Today we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of justice, dignity, and the belief that every person deserves compassion and opportunity.

Dr. King taught us that “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

In recovery, we carry this truth forward every day. We believe that shame and judgment never lead to healing—only compassion, connection, and hope can light the path forward.

As Dr. King reminded us, “The time is always right to do what is right.” If you or someone you love is ready to take that step, we’re here to walk alongside you.

When men address trauma alongside addiction, recovery becomes more than just staying sober. It becomes reclaiming a sense of self, rebuilding relationships, and moving forward with purpose and hope.
We're thrilled to launch our Trauma Program for Men a 12-week recovery track designed specifically for men who want to understand their experiences, strengthen their identity, and build a healthier, more connected life. The program meets three times a week and provides a supportive, structured environment focused on healing and growth.

Do you or a man you love need help? Reach out today.

Staff Spotlight: Meet Ryan Killian, MA
We’re proud to introduce Ryan, who’s leading our new men’s trauma recovery program with the kind of quiet dedication that makes all the difference.
If you’ve worked with Ryan, you know he’s the person who shows up—whether it’s covering a shift, talking through a challenging case, or offering a perfectly timed comment that breaks the tension in a team meeting. His humor is understated but always lands when you need it most.
What stands out about Ryan isn’t just his clinical expertise—it’s his genuine belief in the possibility of healing. He brings a deep understanding of trauma’s impact and an unwavering commitment to creating space where men can do the hard work of recovery without judgment.
Ryan doesn’t need the spotlight (and he’ll probably make a self-deprecating joke about this post), but we know: he’s the one who makes the work better, the team stronger, and the mission real.
His passion for helping people reclaim their lives from addiction and trauma isn’t loud—it’s steady, present, and exactly what our clients need.
We’re grateful to have Ryan leading this vital work.
