The shaking, the cold sterile environment, the mind/body dissociation, and literally just feeling like a vessel that happened to transport a baby into the world (while my husband got most of those initial baby snuggles).
These are just some of the thoughts I had when I reflect back on my own personal c-section experience. (Aside from all of the happy emotions of meeting my sweet baby boy of course)!
✨ April is C-Section Awareness Month, and as a pelvic floor therapist, I want to take a moment to honor every scar, every story, and every strong body that’s navigated this journey.
C-sections are major abdominal surgeries that deserve time, care, and recovery—physically and emotionally. Too often, people are expected to “bounce back” once “surgically cleared”, or aren’t offered as much follow-up compared to those who experienced a vaginal birth.
Here’s what I wish more people knew:
🫶🏼 Scar tissue can affect movement, sensation, and pelvic floor function.
🫶🏼 You can reconnect with your core and feel strong again.
🫶🏼 Pelvic floor therapy isn’t just for vaginal births—C-section parents benefit too!
🫶🏼 Your birth story still needs to be shared and celebrated even if it was under blinding fluorescent lights!
To all my C-section warriors out there:
Your recovery matters. Your strength is admirable. Your scar tells a story worth honoring.
Let’s talk:
💭 If you’ve had a C-section, what surprised you most about the birthing process and recovery?
💭 Or if you’re expecting, what questions do you have about healing after a C-section?
