𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑏𝑙𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑖𝑠 𝑝𝑢𝑙𝑠𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡ℎ𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑑 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑖𝑡 𝑖𝑠 𝑐𝑢𝑡 𝑡𝑜𝑜 𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑙𝑦 𝑖𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑏𝑎𝑏𝑦'𝑠 𝑏𝑙𝑜𝑜𝑑. It's not the possession of anybody else but the mother and her baby's. Nobody should take these benefits away because of a hospital protocol. During the transition to life, that baby is transitioning from fluid-filled lungs to air-filled lungs, and that blood coming from the placenta is helping to hold those alveoli open to allow more blood flow. This process can take a while because, as Karen Strange says, 𝑻𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝑻𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝑻𝒊𝒎𝒆.

Not allowing their body to receive that rich, oxygenated blood that they need and are entitled to is causing their body to experience shock and that's not okay to do when we have steps to take that can avoid that interruption and disturbance for them.

When a baby is going through the physiological steps of birth, during contractions, the body is squeezed, constricted, immediately sending blood back to the placenta and to the head. There is around 66-100ml of blood that is stored in the placenta during the birthing process.

When you are entering the birth space, take time to 𝓅 𝒶 𝓊 𝓈 ℯ. That space is filled with grit and beauty, strength and dignity, pain and vulverability. This space is 𝐬𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐝 and it's important to not take it lightly.

B R E E C H

I photographed the most beautiful, uncomplicated breech birth, and it was absolutely out of this world incredible.

I watched as the baby made their own moves uninterrupted, watched as 3 midwives patiently and anxiously awaited the birth of this baby, ready for whatever was coming next and we were all in shock at how smoothly and fast this birth was.

The mother did wonderfully and was able to have her water birth she wanted in the quiet and peacefulness of her own home, able to rest afterward with some tea made by a midwife with some tinctures to help with pain and bleeding and a care team who did everything to make sure she was taken care of, baby doing good and like magic- cleaned up everything as if nothing had even happened.

This is what breech can look like, and this was proof that it's simply a variation of normal...it's not a reason for a c-section at all!!! Oh, and baby was still in the amniotic sac until they fully came out...it was incredible

I have learned so much in my first year of midwifery school and I care even more about mothers and their babies than I did when I started! So thankful for a wonderful school with amazing midwives teaching us, a cohort of students striving to make the world a better, safer and more loving place for Mama's with me! To all the midwives out there who have gone before us, thank you, thank you, thank you! ♡
