Hey all! May is Melanoma Awareness Month. In addition to other findings, we use the ABCDE 🔠 method to evaluate concerning skin lesions. See if you can apply the below knowledge the photos of these 3 melanoma patients that I have treated just in the last several weeks. Unfortunately, all of them had melanomas that were sufficiently advanced that I had to excise/biopsy lymph nodes to check if there was already spread throughout their body.

A is for asymmetry. Draw a line to split the mole in half to check if the two halves do not match.

B is for borders. Non cancerous moles usually have smooth edges whereas melanoma will have uneven, scalloped, or notched borders.

C is for color. A number of different shades of brown or black is suspicious. Melanoma can even present as red or bluish. Normal moles are generally a single shade of brown.

D is for diameter. Melanoma tends to be larger than a pencil eraser tip (or 6mm), although sometimes can be smaller when first detected.

E is for evolving. That means that if there is any significant change in a mole such as color, shape, size, etc it may be best to have the spot checked.

If you are someone who is fair-skinned and has had a significant amount of sun exposure, make sure to protect your skin from damage with sunscreen 😎 and be on the lookout 🔎 for any concerning moles or non-healing areas

Tummy tuck 🏝👙 Our patient pictured here is only about 1 month out from a full abdominoplasty with monsplasty and therefore is still significantly swollen. Patients can go through for months before they see the final results somewhere between 6-9 months after the surgery. Keep following for when her completed transformation gets posted!
