OCD isn’t only about what you’re thinking. OCD is also about what you’re feeling.

What makes OCD so distressing is not only the intrusive thoughts, but also what you feel about the thoughts.

Exposure and Response Prevention therapy empowers you with skills to help you to cope with the distressing feelings in ways that break the OCD loop!

It is not helpful to tell clients with OCD to just stop overthinking. As therapists, it’s important to be able to recognize when rumination is more than “overanalyzing” or “overthinking.”

Rumination is a mental compulsion. It’s easy to get trapped in loops of rumination, because OCD tells you that if you just think harder you’ll be able to solve an unsolvable problem.

In reality, the brain is engaging in a compulsion, which functions to reinforce OCD.

If you notice yourself ruminating, recognize it as OCD, not as a problem to solve. Shift away from, “Why am I thinking this? What does it mean?” and shift toward, “This is OCD trying to pull me into rumination. I don’t need to engage.” This reduces the urgency that you must “solve” the thought.

You don’t have to feel merry and bright. In fact, OCD recovery means learning to accept the feelings that are NOT so merry or bright, without trying to “solve” or “fix” them and without letting them control how you live your life!

OCD equates uncertainty with a lack of safety. The reality is that uncertainty is not predictive of a lack of safety, nor is it predictive of safety—that’s what makes it uncertain!

Hence, OCD recovery is the process of learning how to sit with the uncertainty of not knowing the out come, while disengaging from compulsions.

If you’re reading this, you have made it to the weekend! You have made it through the bulk of all the family dinners and gatherings.

Even if you’re still traveling or visiting family, no matter how you’re feeling right now or how you feel like things went, you have made it to this point! And this means you have what it takes to get through the holidays with OCD!

Remember that OCD recovery is not about perfection or feeling good all the time. It’s learning to accept imperfection and the discomfort of life’s ups and downs!

OCD can wreak havoc during the holidays, especially if it latches onto the cultural expectation to be happy at all times.

OCD can make you feel like you’re morally failing or being “selfish” if your emotions do not match the cultural expectations to be celebratory and jolly.

But this doesn’t mean your holidays are doomed because of OCD. There is hope!

Exposure and Response Prevention therapy can help you accept the emotional complexity of the holiday season without getting stuck in the OCD cycle!

Not everyone feels thankful on days like today. For some, today brings memories and feelings of loss and grief.

As therapists, it’s vital that we create the space for our clients with OCD to acknowledge their grief whatever day it may be. Practicing gratitude should not feel like a performance. True gratitude leaves space for the full range of emotions.
