SAVMA veterinary students from across the country came to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for SAVMA Symposium 2023, an annual veterinary student conference full of learning, networking, and fun! After a weekend of workshops and lectures at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, they walked over to enjoy a tea ceremony at Japan House! To commemorate the special occasion, the tea equipment selected featured animals that they will one day work with! Can you identify them all? 😸

Did you know.... more than 1 MILLION DOGS were diagnosed with a vector borne illness in 2021?!?!

The savma symposium tick wet lab is going to teach participants about tick borne diseases and their impacts in mostly companion animals but also large animals and exotics as well. The lab will teach participants how to identify different tick species which is important as a veterinarian because we can be considered “experts” to the general public for when ticks are found on our pets. Different ticks carry and transmit different diseases so knowing which tick is which can be very helpful clinically. We also promote and sell a variety of tick preventatives as veterinarians and this wet lab will go over the differences between them. It’s really a great intersection of clinical practice knowledge and public health knowledge that I think is important for all veterinarians to have.

The best part of the wet lab is the hands-on activities. We have models with “ticks” on them in common places that ticks attach and the participants will get practice locating and removing ticks of the models and then identifying real preserved tick specimens. We have 4 specimens of ticks and varying life stages for participants to identify. There is also a variety of hand outs that will be included such as tick identification card.

Let’s talk about professional Conference Etiquette 😁

1. Dress- business professional!
Examples include dress pants/skirt, button down, blazer, suit & tie. Comfortable shoes recomended.
*remember scrubs, closed toed shoes and other materials for wet labs*
2. Be on time and prepared
3. Use active listening and ask thoughtful questions
4. Introduce yourself to new people! Practice your 60 second elevator pitch about yourself… Networking is key to future collaborations and opportunities!
5. Take notes and stay engaged
6. Keep phone on silent and out of view
7. Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated, snack to sustain you between meals, and a comfortable bag to keep belongings
8. Make a plan for which events you plan to attend in advance
9. Prepare to stretch your comfort zone! Professional growth and learning occurs when you make an effort to do so
10. Follow up with connections you make through email or social platforms
