This reminds me of the time I was dreaming I was at the actual Nativity and bent down over baby Jesus in the manger, wondering if He had any tongue restriction. Then immediately asked myself, now why would baby Jesus have tongue restriction? 😅

This is an important discussion. Becoming parents is the biggest role change in both parents' lives and presents unique challenges for both partners.

Fathers also commonly undergo a massive identity shift and transformation as they navigate parenthood.

Maternal mental health resources can be hard to come by, though now the conversation is shifting and gaining more traction.

Supports for fathers/partners on the other hand are extremely limited.

Did you know that 1 in 10 dads gets postpartum depression, and up to 18% develop a clinically significant anxiety disorder such as generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder at some point during the pregnancy or the first year postpartum?

And partners are 50% more likely to experience their own mental health challenges if mom is experiencing a perinatal mood and anxiety disorder?!

We as parents/partners are a unit. We cannot support one and leave the other out to dry with no support of their own. This only serves to impair the system altogether.

I am enjoying providing virtual Telehealth lactation consultations in addition to in person visits, but they do present the challenge of how to tell how much baby is drinking at the breast. This little sweetie has very resourceful parents who found a way with a bowl and a kitchen scale 😊

Worried about COVID-19 infecting your baby? Keep breastfeeding! The virus has not been found in human milk, but your breastmilk is loaded with immune factors to help fight COVID-19! If you are too sick to breastfeed directly, have someone help you pump and give the milk to your baby, who has most likely already been exposed. If you are infected with mild to moderate symptoms, wash your hands before nursing and wear a mask if possible. If you're using a breastmilk substitute, be extra careful about hygiene and sterilization see CDC guidelines on formula prep and consider relactation (La Leche League international has more information) or see an IBCLC.
