Community Choices

Community Choices Choose Dignity. Choose Inclusion. Choose Community. Our Philosophy:

1. We are in this together.

WE ARE NOT AFRAID TO TRY

We believe in emphasizing the dignity of risk, finding new solutions, and developing ways to figure it out together. We are committed to helping identify opportunities, utilizing effective tools to succeed and adjusting when life doesn’t
go as expected.

2. PEOPLE NEED PEOPLE

We strive to support people to be fully involved both in and with the community. We value interd

ependence and believe that the most powerful connections are those with other people. We believe in strengthening mutual, peer-to-peer, and community-based relationships to create more natural, meaningful, and sustainable support networks than traditional approaches.

3. SUCCESS IS A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY

We expect individuals to take an active role in shaping the lives they envision and share the commitment to achieving that vision with all team members through the required time, effort, and dedication.

Congratulations to Urbana Park District for completing our LEAP Front Line Staff Training with their Summer Camp leaders and Aquatics managers!

LEAP: Leaders in Employing All People is a collaborative project between Community Choices and DSC that aims to educate Champaign County employers on the benefits of hiring employees with disabilities. Our frontline staff training furthers that education by educating supervisors and staff on accommodations, learning styles and communication that ultimately lead to more successful job placements for all employees.

If you are interested in either of our LEAP trainings, please contact our Lead Employment Specialist, Ashley Withers (ashley@communitychoicesinc.org)

We are continuing to honor women during Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and Women’s History Month by highlighting Frida Kahlo. Frida Kahlo was a bisexual woman of color with multiple disabilities both congenital and some that happened later in life. She is also a world-famous Mexican artist, best known for her Surrealist art.
She was born with spina bifida. She also developed childhood polio at age six. At eighteen, she got into a bus accident, and experienced chronic pain from this the rest of her life. While recovering from the accident, Frida started painting; many of her paintings reflect her experience of being a person with disabilities. Kaholo once said “They thought I was a surrealist, but I was not. I never painted dreams or nightmares, I painted my reality.”
It was not until after her death that she became well known for her paintings. Frida is considered one of Mexico’s greatest artists and an icon of female creativity.
