We offer students time-limited individual and group counseling, which is covered by the health services fee. We also offer screenings for ADHD, eating disorders, and alcohol/other drugs. For students needing longer-term individual counseling, we can assist with referrals to private therapy.
For first-time appointments, we do same day scheduling. This assures that we can see the most students when their need is the greatest. If you return to the Counseling Center for follow-up appointments, these will be scheduled in advance. To make an appointment, call 217-333-3704. During busy, stressful times of the semester, our appointments can fill up quickly. Therefore, recommend calling the Counseling Center when our phone lines open at 7:50. This brief video explains our appointment process.
Outreach and Prevention Services
We know that for many reasons, students may not always feel comfortable coming to the Counseling Center, so we strive to meet students where they are with our outreach and prevention programming. We offer a wide range of programming on several aspects of mental wellness including time management, stress managements, healthy relationships, self-confidence, and safer drinking habits. During the 2018-19 school year, our outreach activities served more than 34,000 students, faculty, staff, and parents. Outreach events include our Tuesday@ 7 Workshops, which are led by Counseling Center Paraprofessionals, performances by our INNER VOICES Social Issues Theater group, and our ACE IT alcohol education sessions for new students.
We also offer workshops on request for any university-affiliated organization. To learn more about how to request an outreach, please view our website.
Training Services
As a university counseling center, we value providing educational experiences for students who are training to be mental health clinicians. We offer training experiencing for MSW students, beginning and advanced practicums for psychology graduate students, and doctoral internships for those who are seeking a capstone experience to earn their doctorate in psychology.
During the 2018-19 year, we were informed that we received reaccreditation for our doctoral internship training site for a period of 10 years by the American Psychological Association. This is the maximum timeframe for which a site can be reaccredited. We are fortunate that we continue to attract diverse, talented, and driven trainees from across the globe. Trainees are integral part of the Counseling Center and our overall mission.
