Champaign County Medical Reserve Corps

Champaign County Medical Reserve Corps Volunteers that promote and strengthen public health, emergency response, and community resiliency. Leadership positions are appointed by the MRC Board.

MISSION

The Champaign County Medical Reserve Corps was founded to create a cadre of health, medical and general volunteers with skills and expertise to serve and support local health care system functions that are transferable between non-emergency and emergency events. What We're Doing

NATIONALLY
The Medical Reserve Corps is the component of the Citizen Corps that brings together local health professionals and others with relevant health-related skills to volunteer in their community. The Medical Reserve Corps provides health professionals and others an organized mechanism through which they can volunteer their time and skills to strengthen
their communities by preparing for and responding to large-scale emergencies and disasters, such as an influenza epidemic, chemical release or act of terrorism. LOCALLY
The MRC is organized under the Champaign- Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD). The Champaign- Urbana Public Health District's vision is to improve the health, safety, and well-being of the community through prevention, education, collaboration, and regulation. The Champaign County MRC is not a government entity, although the MRC has the support
of several government entities throughout the area and works actively with the communities of Champaign, Urbana, and the County of Champaign in Illinois. The Champaign County MRC is operated with the help of medical and non-medical volunteers. When The Champaign County MRC is mobilized for an exercise or an actual event, command and control is provided by CUPHD or local municipality designates depending on the nature of the event.

Flu sufferers now have a new option for relieving symptoms. Xofluza (baloxavir marboxil), a single-dose, oral prescription drug, was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday. The focus for the heavy rain the next few days is continuing to shift southward with each update. The focus band of heavier rains looks to now be located along and south of the I-72 corridor. Potential exists for 4 to 7 inches in a large area, with locally higher amounts. This would not all fall at once, but even over the course of a few days, the potential for flooding will increase with these amounts. A couple periods of heavier rains are likely, especially this weekend as the remnants of Tropical Storm Gordon arrive.

All children should get a flu shot, which is preferred over the nasal mist, as soon as it becomes available and preferably before Halloween, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends. If Australia is an indicator, flu season could be light.

Afternoon temperatures in the 90s will combine with dewpoints in the 70s, resulting in heat indices in the 99-106 range today. Therefore a Heat Advisory remains in effect for the entire area through this afternoon. Storms will then develop west of the area and move into northwest and west central Illinois early this evening. Storms will spread east and southeast during the night and continue into Wednesday. There is a slight risk that some of the storms this evening northwest of the Illinois river could become severe, with large hail and damaging winds possible. A brief tornado touchdown is also possible. Locally heavy rainfall and intense cloud to ground lightning will also occur with these storms. This system will also bring an end to the oppressive heat, as high temperatures top out in the 70s and 80s for the rest of the week.
