If you were to get an acupuncture treatment solely for preventative purposes (aka, a “tune-up”), your acupuncturist would select a group of points that do the following:
-boost qi (our vital energy and the foundation of how everything in our body works, including the immune system)
-strengthen digestion (that connection between gut health and immunity)
-strengthen the lungs (in Chinese Medicine, the lungs are our first line defense against contracting external “wind conditions” like colds, flus, and allergies)
-settle the mind (stress can weaken the immune system)

As the months grow colder, it is important to have your energy aligned and balanced. Here is a great point to incorporate into your fall season acupuncture routine (or acupressure for ). This acupuncture point can be used to ease pain in the arm, shoulder and elbow. Large Intestine 11 can also regulate the digestive system. Also good for sore throat, toothache, redness and pain of the eye, urticaria, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, heat-related diseases. This point can be found in the crease of the below. To locate LI 11, begin by bending your elbow 90 degrees and place your thumb on the outside (lateral aspect?) of the elbow and apply pressure

As an acupuncturist, one way to help keep your body healthy and balanced, is to use food to prevent and treat disease. There is an understanding within the medicine we do at the clinic, that every type of food contains its own characteristics, and that what we eat is not just a matter of calories, carbohydrates, fats, and protein, but also has to do with temperature.
Foods that are Warming, have “yang” characteristics…they tend to be drying and help to raise the energy and heat of the body by improving circulation while nourishing the cells, tissues, muscles and organs. There are many types of foods and seasonings that contain warming energy. Black and white pepper, ginger, garlic, cayenne, walnuts, green onions, and chili peppers are particularly warm and stimulating.Did you add any of these spices to your meals today? Let me know in the comments below what “warmed” you up today!

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (or TCM), our Wei QI is our first line of defense against external factors that can lead to illness. So it makes sense that the stronger, more nourished and resilient your Wei Qi is, the healthier and more resistant you are to external pathogens that can make us sick. Come on in for a tune up and let us check out your Wei Qi!

As the months grow colder, it is important to have your energy aligned and balanced. Here is a great point to incorporate into your fall season acupuncture routine (or acupressure for ).
Known as “Adjoining Valleys” Large Intestine 4 is often used to balance energies. This powerful point is a part of clearing the system and replenishing Qi. Start by turning your hand palm side down, now squeezing together the thumb and index finger. From here you will be able to locate the fleshy mound between the two fingers, and this is where LI4 can be found. Stimulating this point can be as simple as using your thumb on your other hand.

Supporting your lung health should be at the top of your list, particularly during this world Covid crisis. The good news is that with the help of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine you can begin to make healthy choices to support the health of your Lung Meridian. The Lung Meridian supports your immune response and is often affected by the shift from spring to fall. Navigate a more graceful shift into colder weather by supporting yourself through diet, lifestyle and TCM therapeutic modalities to stay healthy this fall.

Lung 2, also known as “Gathering Clouds” is a very powerful point for subsiding the symptoms of stress, bringing calm fresh energy back into the body. If you are looking to embrace the balancing refreshing powers of LU 2, apply pressure to the depression where the collarbone meets the shoulder blade. This point is also good for cough, asthma, shoulder and arm, fullness and pain in the chest.

The Lung and Large Intestine meridian organ system become the most active during fall. It’s important to take deep, cleansing breaths to release stress, clear your mind, and nurture your physiology. Deep breathing exercises can stimulate your Lung qi, which supports a strong and robust immune system. You can enhance your deep breathing by adding “lung opening” essential oils such as pine, eucalyptus, grapefruit, or frankincense.

The climate in the fall is associated with dryness. Too much dryness can disrupt proper lung function and lead to chapped skin, sore throat and dry nasal passageways. These are all signs of lung dryness. One of the best ways to nourish your lungs and keep membranes healthy, all of which is essential for proper immune function, stay hydrated.
Put honey in hot water, take elderberry concentrate or black cherry herbal syrup. You can add (slimy) mucilaginous foods and herbs to your diet such as - okra, eggs, marshmallow root tea or, slippery elm bark tea or fenugreek tea. What’s your favorite go-to tea for your throat and lungs? Let me know in the comments below.

As an acupuncturist, I understand that each season is linked with a natural element, organ, and emotion. For fall, these are: Metal, Lung and Grief (Metal) Governs organization, communication and protecting boundaries. It also represents an opportunity to finish up projects and reap the “harvest” of all the hard work done during the active seasons. (Lung) This organ is associated with the act of “letting go”. It is susceptible to wind and cold and often advised to wear a scarf around your neck, especially on windy days. (Grief) This is the emotion that is directly tied to the Lung. It embodies “letting go” and grieving changes around us. Grief often feels like a negative emotion, and cleanses us of what is no longer needed in our lives.
The fall is a great time to process your grief rather than letting it stay buried
within.
