✨ Alani’s Toe Walking Journey – Surgery Part 2 (Final Correction) ✨

Today we’re sharing a beautiful moment in Alani’s journey — her second and final surgery to correct severe toe walking caused by Gastrocnemius-Soleus Equinus.

This condition made it impossible for her to stand or walk flat. In this video, Dr. Jarman explains what was happening inside her leg (including a low-lying soleus muscle that was blocking the Achilles from lengthening naturally), and how the procedure restores normal movement.

💛 Our goal: help kids walk normally, run, play, and live without pain.

Toe Walking Isn’t Always a Habit

Hi everyone! We wanted to share something we think could really help families who are dealing with toe walking.

Toe walking in older kids is often dismissed as “a habit” or something a child will “grow out of.” But in many children over age 7 or 8, toe walking can be structural, meaning they may be physically unable to walk flat without proper evaluation and intervention.

We recently created a short 5-minute documentary featuring Shandron (8 years old) and behind-the-scenes care during his toe walking correction journey. Dr. Mikkel Jarman explains what structural toe walking is, why it’s often misunderstood, and what families can expect during recovery.

Parent question: Has anyone here been told toe walking is “just a choice” or “sensory” — and felt like you weren’t getting real answers?

Out-of-state toe walking patient BTS before surgery 👣This patient had a severe equinus contracture (gastroc-soleus equinus) — their ankle was at 90° and wouldn’t come past 45°. That level of tightness changes everything about walking.
After the correct procedure, you can see the difference immediately. This is why proper evaluation + the right surgery matters.

In many toe walking correction cases, surgery is done in stages. After this child’s first foot fully healed. We planned a Part 2, correcting the second foot to improve balance, symmetry, and overall gait mechanics.
Treating one foot first allows children to heal safely, stay mobile during recovery, and begin rehabilitation before moving to the second side. This staged approach is common in pediatric toe walking treatment and helps support long-term walking improvement.

If you’ve ever wondered why we don’t always correct both feet at the same time. This is one of the biggest reasons.

Pediatric Foot and Ankle

Pediatric podiatrists specialize in diagnosing and treating problems affecting children and infants’ feet, including pain in the foot and heel.

Dr. Mikkel Jarman is a pediatric podiatrist practicing in the Phoenix Metropolitan area of Gilbert, Arizona, who specializes in treating the unique needs of children’s feet. Common foot ailments in children include Sever’s disease (heel pain), flat feet, and ankle pain.

A pediatric podiatrist understands the complexities of a child’s or infant’s feet and ankles. At Pediatric Foot & Ankle, we specialize in both treating and preventing children’s foot ailments. Thanks to their rapid growth, a child’s foot care differs significantly from an adult’s.

We always recommend parents consult with a pediatric podiatry specialist to treat their child’s foot ailment. When left unchecked, pain and other issues can lead to your child developing hip and back problems and possibly obesity.
