Your mouth is the “gateway to the body” - bacteria from your teeth and gums can affect your overall health more than you think 🤔

Here are 3 Medical Issues caused by Poor Oral Hygiene:

1. Heart Disease

Poor oral health increases risk for heart disease. “People with gum disease (also known as periodontal disease) have two to three times the risk of having a heart attack, stroke, or other serious cardiovascular event.” - Harvard Health Publishing

What causes gum disease? Bacteria. That same bacteria can enter the bloodstream through the gums causing the arteries to build up plaque and harden.

This hardening of the arteries is called atherosclerosis. It leads to blood flow issues and heart blockages increasing the chances of a heart attack.

2. Dementia

Poor oral health can affect the brain. Gum infections release inflammatory substances. These substances increase brain inflammation and can kill brain cells leading to memory loss.

Dementia and possibly even Alzheimer’s disease can result from gingivitis when the bacteria in the mouth spreads to the nerve channels or enters the bloodstream.

3. Respiratory Infections

The respiratory system can suffer from poor oral health. Bacteria from gum disease can be breathed into the lungs, or travel through the bloodstream to the lungs, where it can lead to respiratory infections, pneumonia, or acute bronchitis.

"Periodontal disease increases the body's burden of inflammation." - Dr. Hatice Hasturk (periodontist)
.. but there's great news!

4 Tips for a Confident Summer Smile ☀️

Summer = fun 😎 (and it's almost here!)
Sandy vacations. BBQs. Fireworks. Family and Friends. Sweet Treats.

But... you know what's even better?

Enjoying your summer activities WITHOUT compromising your healthy smile.

1. Routine: Stick with what works for you

What is the best thing you can do to keep your teeth strong and healthy? Brush 2x a day (2 minutes each) and floss at least once a day.

And with summer around the corner… sunshine lasts longer, bedtimes get later, treats get sweeter, and drinks get colder… it’s tempting to skip brushing after a late night or letting it slide after sleeping in…

So whatever it takes to hype yourself up to brush for 2 minutes after an exhausting family gathering - just do it!

And if you haven't replaced your brush heads in a while, now's the perfect time.

2. Water is more than hydration

It’s no secret that water helps your body function at a high level, but it also helps your oral health.

How? Staying hydrated helps your body produce saliva. Why does saliva matter? Saliva washes away bacteria and food particles, prevents plaque build up, and keeps your teeth and tongue fresh and clean.

(Dry mouth can lead to oral health problems)

3. Stop chewing on ice (yes, it's hard)

Chewing on ice can feel extra refreshing (especially on a hot day), BUT...

Chewing on ice can cause microfractures, which you can’t repair, and as you get older those can turn into cracks.

It can also damage your enamel, causing increased sensitivity to hot and cold leaving you more prone to tooth decay and cavities. Chewing ice can even damage existing dental work like fillings, crowns, and veneers.

4. Better tools = easier to maintain oral care

How you brush makes a big difference.

Manual brush = 300 brush strokes per minute.
