Before beginning Habilitation sessions with your member, it's important to start with the pairing process. Pairing allows the member to become familiar and comfortable with you. During this time, let the member take the lead—engage in their preferred activities, follow their interests, and focus on building a positive, fun environment. The pairing process may take up to two weeks. However, if at any point during your time with the member you feel the need to return to pairing strategies, that is completely appropriate. Taking deep breaths can be a great calming technique. A way to begin working on this skill is when the member is calm. Afterwards you can discuss with the member how this strategy can help them remain calm and gradually introduce using the calming technique when the member needs it to cope.
