We’ve just witnessed the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk and the cruel, callous comments afterward from those who are celebrating his death. Both are disturbing reminders that Christians are living at a time when our culture has become increasingly hostile to the Christian worldview, as well as any moral values associated with it. Many within our culture right now see Christians as being not simply “wrong” or “mistaken,” they see us as “evil.” That is the harsh reality that we need to come to grips with. To pretend otherwise is to live in denial.
In the face of such hostility, it’s tempting to disengage and retreat into silence. However, we have been called to be a “light” to our culture by sharing the Gospel. But we have also been called to be “salt” in our culture, preserving that which is good by advocating for the common good, out of our love for God and others. When it comes to the latter, many Christians are uncertain, even divided, on how to engage with culture and politics.
In her excellent book, “When Culture Hates You: Persevering for the Common Good as Christians in a Hostile Public Square,” author and speaker Natasha Crain not only explains why the culture hates us, she goes on to explain why it is so important for us to stay involved, rather than remaining silent on the issues that shape our families, neighborhoods, and culture. With clarity and insight, she gives sound, practical advice on how we can respond effectively and respectfully to those around us. It begins by having a better understanding- biblically, culturally, and from a civic perspective- regarding our role as Christians in today’s culture. That is, how do we persevere for the common good, even when the culture hates us?
Please make it a priority this weekend to listen to her interview with Alisa Childers as they discuss her new book, which I would highly recommend. You will find the link in the Comments section below.
