“I was nervous at first to receive a blood transfusion, but by the time I was done, I had color in my cheeks; my gums turned pink, and I had energy, so much so, I became chatty and vibrant. My vision was back, and this was all from receiving a blood donation!” Sarah, cancer survivor and transfusion recipient

Sarah never anticipated a cancer diagnosis at 21. After years of experiencing recurring leg pain, doctors finally had an explanation: Ewing Sarcoma, a pediatric bone cancer that can often lie undetected for years.

A platelet transfusion and four whole blood transfusions restored her strength, color, and vision.

Now, over 10 years cancer-free, Sarah is happily married and raising two young boys while helping share messages of hope to those fighting cancer and hosting blood drives.

For Johnny, donating platelets is personal: “I used to donate Power Reds, but after a conversation with my phlebotomist about how platelets help cancer patients, I realized how much they’re needed. I have dear friends and family fighting cancer, and I thought, what better way to help them and give back?”

Cary added, “My wife and I donate together. She’s a whole blood donor, and I focus on platelets. Even though she’s not eligible right now, I still show up to do my part and donate.”

For both, the reason is simple: “It’s the right thing to do.”

Saving lives starts with one choice. For Eddi, that choice turned into decades of giving hope to others.

Eddi began donating blood in 1979 after hearing about a patient in need of O- blood. Years later, she needed a transfusion herself after a tumor diagnosis. Then, a leukemia misdiagnosis left her unable to donate for 9 months. Her first question to doctors? “When can I donate again?”

When Eddi finally returned to donating, she cried with relief. “If people don’t donate, little ones like my granddaughter wouldn’t make it,” she said.
