What started as a free soda turned into 25 years of lifesaving donations.

Years ago, James stopped in to donate blood on a hot day because he heard he would get a soda. That one-time decision quickly became a habit, and over time he became a dedicated platelet donor, contributing more than 300 units. His decades of giving help ensure lifesaving blood and platelets are available when patients need them most.

Every donation, whether it’s your first or your hundredth, makes a difference for patients relying on transfusions.

Ever wonder what happens to a blood donation before it reaches a patient?

A key part of that journey happens in the lab.

For nearly 20 years, I-Lin has been part of the Vitalant team helping ensure donated blood is carefully tested and matched for those relying on transfusions.

“We test a sample of the patient’s blood to determine blood type and antibodies. Then, we crossmatch it with donor blood samples to find and provide a compatible blood product for the patient in need.”

In recognition of International Day of Women and Girls in Science, I-Lin shares what draws her to this field:

“The work of a medical laboratory scientist is highly scientific and analytical, requiring attention to detail and critical thinking. If you love science, want a meaningful career, and don’t mind helping people quietly behind the scenes, this may be a great fit.”

A legacy that transformed transfusion science continues to fuel what comes next.

For more than 40 years, Dr. Michael P. Busch helped strengthen the safety of the blood supply, guiding breakthroughs that reshaped how emerging threats are identified and addressed. His leadership continues to protect patients and advance lifesaving science.

Established in his honor, the Dr. Michael P. Busch First Response Fund empowers the Vitalant Research Institute to rapidly pivot when new risks arise, ensuring research can move swiftly and boldly when it matters most.

Rose used to donate blood as a teen, never imagining she would one day depend on it herself.

After an unexpected cancer diagnosis, she has relied on more than 40 blood and platelet transfusions during treatment. Now, she’s giving back by hosting a blood drive and encouraging others to donate during National Blood Donor Month.

🩸 Help support patients like Rose this January. Schedule your donation at vitalant.org and learn how to host a blood drive at vitalant.org/BloodDrive.

Two hundred platelet donations didn’t happen by chance. They happened by choice.

Keirsten recently reached 200 platelet donations, each one given with patients in mind. Platelets are vital for people facing cancer treatment, transplants, trauma, and surgery, and because they last only a few days, the need never pauses. Keirsten understood that early and chose to keep coming back.

Her commitment goes beyond her own donations. Keirsten also helps coordinate blood drives because she knows saving lives works best when more people are empowered to step in. By making donation easier and more accessible, she helps ensure patients are supported in their time of need.

Two hundred platelet donations represent far more than a milestone. They reflect reliability, leadership, and a deep understanding that saving lives takes consistency and community.

Sometimes saving lives starts with a simple invite.

Beata invited her daughter Jasmine to donate with her, and that invitation led to Jasmine’s very first blood donation.

Every donation has the power to help patients through surgeries, treatments, and emergencies. A first donation is often the moment someone realizes they have the power to save lives and are inspired to make a commitment to continue giving.

When you refer a friend to donate with Vitalant, you are doing more than asking them to join you. You are helping someone step into that role for patients who depend on donors every day.

Who would you invite to donate with you? Get your referral code and help someone take their first step: vitalant.org/ReferAFriend

Love doesn’t always look like flowers and cards. Sometimes it looks like holding someone’s hand while they help save lives.

Aarika stood by her husband John while he gave blood at a local blood drive. She couldn’t give blood that day, but her presence made a real difference. Supporting someone as they step up to help others is a powerful way to show love.

This Valentine’s Day, we’re celebrating all the ways love shows up. When we lift others up and help them take action, we all help save lives together.
