As an organization founded in Arlington, Community Residences Inc joins many others in the County today recognizing the loss of Judge William T. Newman Jr. His advocacy for inclusion and human rights made him a successful community leader and an example to individuals of many backgrounds and abilities.
It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Judge William T. Newman, Jr., founder of Arlington Community Foundation.
Judge Newman was motivated by his deeply held belief that Arlington has all the ingredients necessary to be a shining example of a just, generous, and compassionate place where everyone can thrive.
As a trailblazing member of the Arlington County Board, a tireless judge, and the founder of Arlington Community Foundation, he touched virtually every corner of this community. When he spoke, everyone in the room listened. When he acted, people followed his example. He put in the work to build and steward the foundational elements of a strong community that will benefit this place he loved for generations to come.
The Community Foundation exists because he saw what was possible when people come together to support their neighbors, invest in local solutions, and build institutions that outlast any one moment.
The deep loss we feel today is a testament to the depth and breadth of the legacy he leaves behind for all of us.

OUR NAME HAS CHANGED, BUT OUR STORY REMAINS THE SAME.
We are excited for change, but rooted in a deep history. As we grow & re-brand to be better for you, we pride ourselves on making sure that we never forget where we came from.
Community Residences began in 1975 when a group of Arlington families, faith groups and government leaders worked with Arlington County to charter an independent nonprofit agency that would bring together and expand efforts to help people with mental health and/or developmental disabilities.
At its outset, Arlington Community Residences (as it was initially known) stood at the forefront of the growing community integration movement. This grass-roots, family-driven effort sought to create community-based alternatives to the institutionalization of people with mental health or intellectual disabilities. Arlington Community Residences brought together a few existing group homes and started several new homes so that Arlington resident with disabilities could live close to and regularly interact with family, friends and and neighbors.
As the community integration movement grew and the demand for community-based alternatives expanded, Arlington Community Residences became Community Residences when services were initiated throughout Northern Virginia, the Richmond area, and in
Maryland. Expansion was not only geographic; CRi also began to offer case management and transitional support for people who were homeless, residential youth services, day programs for adult with developmental disabilities, and home-based clinical and practical support for people living on their own.
Over the past four decades, thousands of individuals have been supported by CRi. That tradition continues with individualized support providing for fulfilling, high-quality lives of maximum independence.
We look forward to the future & are excited to see just what we can accomplish, together!
