Alex and myself have been told countless times by staff that their time at camp was "Life Changing." We also tell the staff that you will hopefully leave the summer learning more about yourself. I can say without a doubt those words are so true.
I started my camping career way back in 2007 in PA as a 20 something trying to figure out life. What better way to figure out life than going to a special needs camp near the Juniata River in PA? Well little did that 20 something Whitney know it would lead to so much more- so many lessons learns, lifelong friendships, laughs, late night talks, finding her dream job, a career path, and a home. 1 Music Therapy degree, 3 summers at that camp in PA, 1 summer at a camp in Maryland, 1 full time first out of college job later here I am........In my dream job as the Assistant Camp Director.
I remember my first day arriving at Camp Easterseals feeling nervous, unsure, but oddly at home. I was not totally sure this camping experience was going to be the same as my others. My other experiences I was a camp counselor, program staff, head counselor but never full time adult job camp staff. Well it has not been the same in a great way. It has been a learning experience and so much fun along the way. I have laughed so hard I have cried, been so tired I thought I could not go on, and learned and continue to learn each day. I continue to meet and learn from some of the most amazing campers, parents, staff, and volunteers that each day remind me how crazy lucky I am that I get to follow this dream. Along with working at this amazing place that has become home. Camp truly is the hardest job I love and continue to love.
Future Staff: Take that leap of faith......speaking from experience you will learn so much about yourself, others, and will have the experience of a lifetime.
