Being a caregiver for your parents is challenging, especially from afar. Long-distance caregiving comes with its own set of hurdles, but you don't have to do it alone!

Here are some tips to make it easier:

Schedule Family Meetings: Keep everyone in the loop with regular check-ins, whether in person or via Zoom. Involve your elderly loved ones in the conversation.

Power of Attorney: Ensure your parents appoint a power of attorney for medical and financial decisions, especially before any cognitive decline.
Emergency Plan: Have a plan in place for quick access to your paren
ts when needed, along with a local support system.

In-Home Care Services: Consider services that provide regular check-ins or assistance, so your parents can remain independent at home.

Emergency Call Button: Equip them with a call button or specialized phone for peace of mind. Help is just a button away!

Remember, you can't do it all, and that's perfectly okay - Reach out today for more information!

Checklist for Moving Elderly Parents into Your Home

Moving elderly parents into your home is a big transition, both emotionally and logistically. Here’s a helpful checklist to make the process smoother for everyone:

Assess Care Needs: Be realistic about what level of care they require and how you can meet those needs.

Set Boundaries & Prioritize Privacy: Have clear conversations about shared spaces and personal time to reduce friction.

Downsize Together: Work with your parents to minimize their belongings and make space in your home.

Start Early: Moving always takes longer than expected, so begin preparations well in advance.

Moving your parents into your home is a huge step, but with the right planning and conversations, it can be a rewarding experience for everyone.

Built Upon the Timeless Values of Compassion and Care

Griswold Home Care was founded by the late Jean Griswold in 1982, and we are celebrating our 35th anniversary as the oldest non-medical home care franchise organization in the country. While we operate in a growing industry with many respected competitors, we are unique. We call the characteristics that make us unique our Griswoldness. Those characteristics come directly from Jean Griswold.

About Jean Griswold

Our founder, Jean Griswold, was an entrepreneur who founded and managed a non-medical home care corporation while confined to a wheelchair due to Multiple Sclerosis.

Jean started what is now Griswold Home Care at her dining room table in 1982 in suburban Philadelphia. Her husband, Presbyterian Minister Dr. Lincoln Griswold informed her that an elderly woman in their parish had died because she could not find someone to help her with daily activities. Troubled by the news, Jean pressed for details. She learned that without support, the woman had stopped eating and drinking and eventually passed away from kidney failure. Jean was deeply saddened by what she felt was an easily preventable tragedy. She was driven to act.
