Covid is surging in North Carolina right now. Possible side effects include flu symptoms that can be mild or extreme, and a possibility of developing long Covid, which is disabling for many people. To mitigate the risk of catching Covid, get vaccinated, wear masks inside, and do activities to improve your immune system like getting enough rest, eating well and drinking enough water, and getting outdoors when possible to increase Vitamin D levels.

To improve lymphatic drainage in the brain, prioritize healthy sleep, maintain good vascular health through exercise, and consider lifestyle changes like stress reduction. The brain's lymphatic system, also known as the glymphatic system, relies on these factors for optimal function.

In a groundbreaking study, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have uncovered a potential new approach to tackling age-related memory decline. Their research focuses on enhancing the brain’s waste-draining lymphatic vessels, which become less efficient with age, contributing to cognitive issues like memory loss and diseases such as Alzheimer’s. By rejuvenating these vessels in older mice, they observed significant improvements in memory and a reduction in harmful brain inflammation.

The study, published in Cell, targets the meningeal lymphatics, a network of vessels outside the brain that helps clear waste and fluid. As people age, the flow of fluid in the brain declines, making it harder for the brain to clear debris. This buildup strains the brain’s immune cells, which become overwhelmed and less effective at cleaning, eventually leading to cognitive decline. In this study, the researchers improved the function of these lymphatic vessels by stimulating vessel growth in older mice, which led to better memory performance as demonstrated in a simple object recognition test.

The findings suggest that therapies aimed at supporting the lymphatic system could offer a new avenue for treating age-related cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases. By restoring balance to the brain’s cleaning system, the researchers hope to find ways to slow down or even reverse some of the cognitive impacts of aging, opening up possibilities for treatments that don’t directly target the brain itself.

Reduce usage of toxic containing cosmetics to improve health.

A study out of UC Berkeley and Clinica de Salud del Valle Salinas evealed how quickly our bodies can respond when we reduce exposure to hormone-disrupting chemicals in personal care products. Published in Environmental Health Perspectives, the research followed 100 Latina teenagers who switched to products free of common endocrine disruptors including phthalates, parabens, triclosan, and oxybenzone.

These chemicals, found in nearly all conventional cosmetics, soaps, sunscreens, shampoos, and hair products, have been shown to interfere with hormonal systems in animal studies. After just three days of using alternative products, the results were remarkable: urine samples showed methyl and propyl parabens (common cosmetic preservatives) decreased by 44% and 45% respectively, metabolites of diethyl phthalate (a fragrance ingredient) dropped 27%, and both triclosan and benzophenone-3 levels fell by 36%.

This study demonstrates how simple product switches can significantly reduce our body's chemical burden in a surprisingly short timeframe, suggesting that consumers have considerable power to lower their exposure to potentially harmful ingredients through everyday choices.

Ageing is a scientifically fascinating and complex biological occurrence characterised by morphological and functional changes due to accumulated molecular and cellular damage impairing tissue and organ function. Ageing is often accompanied by cognitive decline but is also the biggest known risk factor for Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia. Emerging evidence suggests that sedentary and unhealthy lifestyles accelerate brain ageing, while regular physical activity, high cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), or a combination of both, can mitigate cognitive impairment and reduce dementia risk. The purpose of this Review is to explore the neuroprotective mechanisms of endurance exercise and highlight the importance of CRF in promoting healthy brain ageing. Key findings show how CRF mediates the neuroprotective effects of exercise via mechanisms such as improved cerebral blood flow, reduced inflammation, and enhanced neuroplasticity. We summarise evidence supporting the integration of endurance exercise that enhances CRF into public health initiatives as a preventive measure against age-related cognitive decline. Additionally, we address important challenges such as lack of long-term studies with harmonised study designs across preclinical and clinical settings, employing carefully controlled and repeatable exercise protocols, and outline directions for future research.

🧠 What are the neuroprotective mechanisms of exercise? And just how important is fitness for healthy brain ageing?

Growing evidence suggests sedentary and unhealthy lifestyles accelerate brain ageing, while regular physical activity, high cardiorespiratory fitness—or a combination of both—can mitigate cognitive impairment and reduce dementia risk.

I attended an information-packed nutrition seminar this past weekend near Nashville, TE called 'The Gut-Brain Connection: Improving Digestion, Immunity & Brain Health'. The digestion of the food we choose and eat impacts virtually every aspect of our wellbeing. Small changes can lead to crucial benefits. I liked the variety of attendees in our class, many of whom shared their insights and experiences on this topic.
