This past weekend, Drs. Donna Culton and Laura Ferris traveled to Paris, France to attend the European Academy of Dermatology & Venereology (EADV) Congress.

At the congress, both Drs. Culton and Ferris represented UNC Dermatology by speaking on their areas of expertise. Dr. Culton spoke at the Advent symposium covering Bullous Pemphigoid: Insights and Innovation. Dr. Ferris covered Therapies for Generalized Pustular Psoriasis.

We’re proud of them for representing UNC Chapel Hill and UNC Dermatology on an international level!

Faculty from the UNC School of Medicine, Department of Dermatology attended the 2025 Association of Professors of Dermatology (APD) Annual Meeting in Fort Worth, Texas this past weekend, where the theme was Embracing Change.

Drs. Huang, Ziemer, Nieman, McShane, and Morrell did a great job representing Carolina blue out in Texas!

We are excited to showcase William W Huang, MD, MPH, FAAD for our second Faculty Spotlight! Dr. Huang joined UNC Dermatology as a Professor and Vice Chair for Strategic Initiatives in June.

Dr. Huang completed both his Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health degrees at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He stayed in North Carolina for an Internal Medicine Internship at East Carolina University/ECU Health. Dr. Huang then moved to Chicago to complete his Dermatology Residency at Rush University Medical Center. Dr. Huang’s past appointments include Professor and Residency Program Director at Wake Forest University School of Medicine Department of Dermatology and Adjunct Professor at Duke University School of Medicine Department of Dermatology. His clinical interests include General Pediatric & Adult Dermatology and Complex Medical Adult Dermatology.

We are excited to have Dr. Huang as a member of our UNC Dermatology Faculty and family! 🩺🩵

This past weekend, several Faculty members, Residents, and Medical Students attended the North Carolina Dermatology Association Summer Meeting! Pictured we have Drs. Varma (Mohs Surgery), Lei, and Osmani (Residents) enjoying their time in Wilmington.

Dr. Osmani additionally presented the UNC Dermatology Resident Talk (for which she won Best Resident Presentation). Medical Students Emma Myers and Youngsun Kim presented their posters as well at the meeting.

We’re very proud to have had such great representation at the 2025 NCDA Summer Meeting this year and can’t wait for the next one!

Drs. Dean Morrell, Beth Nieman, and Emma Hignett (co-chief resident) enjoyed the 50th Annual Society for Pediatric Dermatology meeting in Seattle this past week. We can’t wait to hear about everything they learned!

The UNC Dermatology Residency Class of 2028 is off to the races! They’ve had an exciting month filled with orientation and getting to know the Department and Chapel Hill. Our new residents are looking forward to everything the next few years will bring! 💙🐏

Congratulations to the Class of 2025 who end their time with UNC Dermatology today. Dr. Kendall Flanigan, Dr. Sarah Kitts, Dr. Matthew Lipner, Dr. Maria-Melendez-Gonzalez, Dr. Claire Petit, Dr. Kelly Jo Tackett, and Dr. Olivia Suarez-Jew celebrated their graduation on June 14 at the Rizzo Center. Congratulations! We will miss you!

For the last 17 years, UNC has kicked off Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month with the annual UNC Conference on Melanoma and Complex Skin Cancers.

This conference is a joint venture between the UNC Departments of Dermatology and Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology, the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, and is sponsored by Piedmont AHEC.

Several members of the Department of Dermatology spoke at the conference, including: Dr. Laura Ferris, chair; Dr. Jayson Miedema, Director of Dermatopathology; Dr. Paul Googe, Professor Emeritus of Dermatopathology; Dr. Rami Al-Rohil, Dermatopathologist; and Dr. Puneet Jolly, Medical Director.

Even though our team had a busy day of learning and sharing knowledge, there was still a quick moment for our residents and Drs. Ferris, Thomas, and Googe to snap a quick shot together!
