Faces grow around the tongue

The tongue plays a key role in guiding proper facial growth and development.
When it rests on the roof of the mouth and moves well, it helps form wide dental arches, supports airway health, and promotes balanced facial structure. 🦷👃

But when tongue function is limited — whether due to a restricted range of motion (like in a tongue tie), low muscle tone, etc — it can impact:
🔹 Jaw and facial development
🔹 Tooth alignment
🔹 Breathing and sleep
🔹 Long-term oral function

At The Breathe Institute, we take a functional approach — addressing the root causes to support healthy growth from the inside out.

I can't emphasize how important it is to get evaluated by somebody who know ties. Not all providers have training in how to look for ties, how to treat ties, and the impact of ties on function and oral facial development.

Proper tongue posture involves resting the tongue up ⬆️ against the palate.

1. The tip should rest just behind the front teeth, but not touching them.

2. The middle and posterior sections should be in contact with the roof of the mouth.

3. The teeth should be slightly apart, and the lips should be closed.

Maintaining this posture can help with proper nasal breathing, optimal dental and facial development.

Where does your tongue rest when you are not speaking or eating?? 👅👅

While we are at it…..

A recent New York Times (NYT) article accused all tongue-tie providers of over-treatment, harming babies, taking advantage of vulnerable moms and babies, and, of course, doing it purely for financial gain. Tongue-tie naysayers jump on the article and share it - “See! I told you so!” and, in so d...

The Impact of our tongue position and function

👉 when the tongue is high, it works as a really good natural palate expander to guide optimal
growth in the upper arch.

👉 when the tongue is down, you get problems with dental crowding, not only because of the tongue posture but also the function.

👉 When you possess incorrect tongue function due to strength, tongue-tie, etc.. you’re often not chewing and swallowing correctly, so you’re more likely to have problems with a posterior cross bite, dental crowding, high narrow palates, long facial growth pattern, gummy smile, vertical maxillary excess, affecting not only the midface, but the orbit and often the entire body.

Remember that the roof of the mouth is the floor of the nose and the floor of the maxilla is the roof of the orbit.

If you believe you are experiencing any of these issues consult with an airway focused provider!

“These comments/myths are based on unsupported as well as undocumented information and make it confusing and often difficult for mothers to get appropriate care for their infant. The failure to breastfeed is often placed on the mother, although it is most likely due to the infant’s lip and tongue attachments.” Lawrence Kotlow (SOS 4 TOTS)
