In this research from the UNC Facial Nerve Center, we demonstrate certain patient populations (e.g., patients living in rural areas, non-English speaking patients, Black patients) with limited access to care are less likely to present for evaluation of their facial paralysis. We must work hard to make sure all facial paralysis patients have access to our treatments.

This week was the Annual AAFPRS Meeting in New Orleans. As one of the biggest facial paralysis meetings in the world, it is a great opportunity to educate others and share ideas about how to best care for patients with facial paralysis. Here is Dr. Miller with Dr. Mohan (left) from Yale and Dr. Ozucer (right) from Istanbul, Turkey.

Research shows as many as 40% of patients with facial paralysis have a mental health issue such as depression or anxiety. As we get ready to recognize World Mental Health Day on October 10, we must remember how common mental health issues are among facial paralysis patients. YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!! It is imperative that we continue to focus on the mental health along with the physical health of patients with facial paralysis.
