Does exercise drop off your to-do list in the winter months? Maybe you feel like you don’t have time during the holiday hustle and bustle, or perhaps you struggle to stay motivated to move when it’s cold and dark outside. Spending time on the couch, snuggled up with a blanket, might sound way more appealing.

“Get that workout in, and then get cozy,” says Kyle Blum, a personal trainer at UNC Wellness Centers. “This is a time of year when a lot of people stop their activity, but it’s important to find ways to keep moving and maintain routine.”

Exercise will help boost your immune system as respiratory viruses circulate and it can help your mental health if winter is difficult for you.

“When you’re depressed by dark days or feeling stressed by the season, exercise can help you feel good,” Blum says.

Blum shares some advice for moving when it’s cold outside.

Don’t let cold weather keep you from moving.

Maternal Health Awareness Day, observed on January 23, shines a light on the urgent maternal mortality crisis in the U.S., which disproportionately affects women of color and underserved communities. Established in 2018 and now recognized nationally, this day reminds us that about 80% of maternal deaths are preventable with the right care and resources.

The 2025 theme, “Know What’s at Stake,” encourages awareness of the risks women face during and after pregnancy—and the collective action needed to ensure safer pregnancies and healthier outcomes for all mothers. 💜

Please note that our office will be closed Monday 1/19/26 as we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Normal business operations will resume the following day.

Taking the time to bundle up in layers of clothing and all your cold weather accessories can be annoying—especially if you have to get children dressed in all their gear as well—but it’s essential when temperatures drop.

Cold weather puts you at risk for hypothermia, when the core body temperature falls below 95 degrees Fahrenheit, and frostbite, which occurs when tissues in the body freeze. Frostbite typically occurs when temperatures are below 5 F, including windchill, but hypothermia is a risk during even mild winters.

“When it’s extremely cold, people will think more about the weather and layer up to avoid frostbite,” says UNC Health emergency medicine physician Laura Murphy, MD. “What’s dangerous about hypothermia is that it doesn’t have to be really cold to develop.”

Both conditions can cause serious health problems, but they’re also preventable.

Older adults and young children are at higher risk in freezing temperatures.

Here’s the bad news: There’s no guarantee that you won’t be one of the millions of people to get the flu this year. The flu virus spreads rapidly, so it’s easy to be exposed in the process of going about your day.

Now, the good news: There are many simple steps you can take to reduce your risk of getting sick. If you do get sick, there are ways to reduce your risk of serious complications. We talked to UNC Health family medicine doctor Amber Komorian, MD, about how to keep your family safe during flu season.

The end of the year is a great time to check in with your mental health. Were you able to deal with stress and challenges the way you wanted to? How has your mood been? Are your relationships doing well?

If you feel there is room for improvement, the new year provides an opportunity to set a resolution for improved mental and emotional well-being, and we have six ideas for you.

If a resolution feels too daunting to you right now, start small, says Jeff Neer, a licensed clinical social worker in UNC’s Department of Psychiatry and manager of the UNC Farm at Penny Lane.

“It’s easy to feel overwhelmed but think through what you want to do and plan the first step,” Neer says. “Don’t try to do it all at once, but don’t give up if it’s not perfect or if you don’t do this in January. It’s never too late for a first step.”

If you’re looking to recharge, consider these small steps.
