Successful Steps Dyslexia Intervention

Successful Steps Dyslexia Intervention I’m a certified Wilson Dyslexia Practitioner offering online reading tutoring using the evidence-based Wilson Reading System.

I help students with dyslexia improve reading fluency, decoding, spelling, and confidence through personalized intervention. I’ve been an educator for over 20 years, with extensive experience teaching both elementary and secondary students. Over time, I discovered my deep passion for teaching reading and writing. However, I realized that some students with learning disabilities, particularly those with dyslexia, were not receiving the support they needed to succeed. This led me to pursue a Master's degree in Education and advanced training to become a certified reading specialist and Wilson Dyslexia Practitioner, specializing in the Wilson Reading System. This evidence-based structured literacy program helps students with dyslexia improve their reading skills. I now teach privately, both in-person and online, providing specialized reading instruction to students of all ages. My goal is to offer intensive, personalized tutoring for students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences, helping them gain the skills and confidence they need to succeed in school and beyond.

When and how should you seek a dyslexia evaluation for your child?

This is one of the most thoughtful and important decisions parents face.

Some families are told to wait.
Others feel pressure to test right away.
Most just want to make the right decision at the right time.

In my latest blog post, I walk through this using two guiding questions:

WHEN is it appropriate to pursue a dyslexia evaluation?
• What to watch for at different ages
• Why ongoing reading struggles in second grade and beyond deserve attention

HOW should you move forward?
• School evaluation vs. private evaluation
• What a comprehensive evaluation actually includes
• Whether you will receive a diagnosis
• Why you don’t have to wait for a diagnosis to begin structured literacy intervention

A thorough evaluation can provide clarity, guide the right intervention, and support IEP or 504 planning. But timing and purpose matter.

If you’re trying to decide what your child needs next, I hope this helps.

Many parents quietly wonder:

Do children with dyslexia have strengths that are often overlooked?

When a child has dyslexia, reading and spelling tend to take over every conversation. Progress and fluency can feel urgent, especially as grade-level expectations rise. In that focus, it’s easy to miss something important.

Dyslexia affects how a child learns to read, not how they think, reason, or understand complex ideas. In my work as a Wilson Reading System®–certified dyslexia specialist, I see children with real strengths every day. Those strengths are often hidden, not absent, especially in school settings that rely heavily on written work.

I just shared a new blog that looks at:

• How dyslexia affects the brain

• Why strengths are often missed in school

• What research and real-life experience show about dyslexic strengths

• How parents can support confidence alongside reading intervention

If you’re parenting or supporting a child with dyslexia, I hope this encourages you.

Dyslexia is one of the most misunderstood words in education.

Many parents hear the term and wonder what it actually means. Is dyslexia just a reading delay? Is it caused by poor teaching or lack of effort? Why do some children seem to struggle more as they get older?

In my latest blog post, I explain what dyslexia truly is and what it is not, using clear, parent-friendly language grounded in research. I also share why dyslexia can look different at different ages and why many children are identified later than expected.

Many parents have told me something like this:

“I knew my child was struggling to read… but I didn’t realize how significant it was.”

Often, the delay in getting help isn’t because parents ignore concerns. It’s because they’re told things that sound reassuring:
• “They’ll grow out of it.”
• “They’re bright, so it can’t be dyslexia.”
• “Slow reading isn’t a big deal.”
• “Once there’s a 504 or IEP, that should solve it.”

I recently wrote a blog post that breaks down 10 common dyslexia myths that keep parents from getting help, and what research actually shows instead.

If you’re a parent who has ever wondered whether to wait, push, or ask more questions about your child’s reading, I hope this brings clarity and reassurance.

💬 Question for parents:
Have you ever been told to “wait and see” when you felt something wasn’t quite right?

Many parents delay getting help for dyslexia not because they ignore concerns, but because they are told things that sound reassuring. This post breaks down the most common dyslexia myths parents hear and explains what research actually shows, so families can make informed decisions sooner.

When reading doesn’t come easily for a child, most parents don’t start with answers.
They start with questions.

Is this just a phase?
Why does reading take so much effort?
Why does my child understand stories but struggle to read independently?

These questions often come up long before testing or diagnoses enter the picture. They matter because they are often the first signs that a child may need a different kind of support.

I just shared a new blog post that explores the questions parents commonly ask when their child’s reading doesn’t come easily, what research tells us about those early concerns, and why families don’t need to wait for a formal diagnosis to start helping their child.

If your child has been diagnosed with dyslexia—or you strongly suspect dyslexia—you’re likely looking for an approach that is clear, structured, and effective.

I’m Heidi, a Wilson Dyslexia Practitioner and dyslexia specialist. I provide one-on-one reading intervention using the Wilson Reading System, an evidence-based, structured literacy approach designed specifically for students with dyslexia and persistent reading difficulties.

Many of the families I work with come to me after trying other reading programs without seeing the progress they hoped for. My focus is on explicit, systematic instruction that helps students build accurate decoding skills, spelling, and confidence as readers.

Most parents don’t start out thinking about dyslexia.

They start with a feeling that something isn’t quite lining up.

Their child is curious, thoughtful, and capable, but learning to read feels harder than it should. Reading practice doesn’t seem to help the way everyone expects. Progress feels slow, uneven, or exhausting.

What many parents don’t realize is that early signs of dyslexia often appear before reading instruction even begins, during language development. Difficulty with rhyming, remembering verbal information, slow or effortful reading, or strong understanding when listening but struggling to read independently can be part of a bigger pattern.

What matters most isn’t one hard year or one missed milestone.
It’s patterns over time, especially when progress doesn’t improve with typical instruction.

I hear from so many parents who say they wish someone had told them earlier that noticing these patterns isn’t overreacting. It’s paying attention.

Early awareness doesn’t label a child.
It helps parents ask better questions and find better support.

💬 I’m curious:
What was the first sign that made you stop and think, “Something isn’t lining up yet”?

👉 If this resonates, I wrote a blog post that explains the early signs of dyslexia parents often notice, what matters most, and what to do next.

Many parents ask the same question: Is online dyslexia tutoring really as effective as in-person support?

With so many families trying to balance busy schedules, school changes, and learning gaps, it’s an important question to ask. In this post, I break down what the research actually shows and explain what matters most when choosing dyslexia tutoring for your child. Spoiler: progress depends far more on the quality of instruction than on whether tutoring happens online or face to face.

If you’re navigating reading support for a child with dyslexia and want clear, evidence-based guidance, I hope this article brings clarity and reassurance.
