Week 4: Highlighting Neurodiversity: Autism, ADHD and Neurodivergence

Neurodiversity refers to the various ways our brains can process information. The Autistic Self Advocacy Network explains that “neurodiversity means that no two brains are exactly the same. Every person has things they are good at and things they need help with, and there is no such thing as a “normal” brain. The neurodiversity movement says that people with brain-based disabilities (like autism, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, or mental health disabilities) should be accepted and included in society just like neurotypical people (people without brain-based disabilities).”

Do you know what it means when someone talks about an Autism “Spectrum?” It can be confusing to adults, too!

The Disability Rights Movement has a rich history in the United States. Not surprisingly, the people who understand disability best are the ones living WITH a disability. The Disability Self-Advocacy Movement focuses on self-determination as well as insisting that disabled individuals lead the conversation about their lives and needs.

This week we will share resources about Self-Advocacy organizations.
