Molluscum contagiosum is a viral skin infection caused by the poxvirus. It is common among toddlers and older children, especially those involved in contact sports such as wrestling.

The lesions are often asymptomatic though some children say they itch. Rarely do they hurt. They can vary in size and occur anywhere on the body except the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. This can differentiate them from common planter warts.

Uniquely, these lesions last a terribly long time, 8 to 12 months on average but sometimes up to years. Thankfully the body will eventually recognize them and fight them off to full resolution without any sequela.

For those kids with lesions on the face or other locations that are particularly distressing there is treatment available with varying efficacy. An old wives tale, daily application of apple cider vinegar may be helpful. There is an OTC medicine called molluscum RX available online. Additional include cryotherapy and a topical medicine called cantharidin. Interestingly, the latter is a substance that comes from blister beetles and is commonly referred to as beetle juice.

Rest assured, these are very common and do go away in time. If you have any questions about them please comment below or reach out at info@wafering Pediatrics.com or your local pediatrician.

At Wayfaring Pediatrics, we wholeheartedly believe in the transformative power of family connections to significantly enhance overall health and well-being. Here's a deeper look into why gathering around the table is far more than just sharing a meal:

Strengthens Bonds 💪 - Regular mealtimes provide invaluable opportunities to foster closer relationships among family members. This cherished time together helps build trust, understanding, and creates lasting memories that will be treasured for years to come.

Promotes Healthier Eating 🥦 - When families come together to prepare and enjoy home-cooked meals, it often leads to better nutritional choices for everyone involved. These meals tend to be more balanced and wholesome, supporting healthier lifestyles and long-term well-being for all family members.

Encourages Open Communication 🗣️ - The act of sharing a meal offers a relaxed and comfortable setting for meaningful conversations. It's a special time when family members can freely express their thoughts and feelings, offering emotional support and strengthening communication skills.

Reduces Stress 🌟 - Taking the time to sit down and enjoy a meal together can be a wonderful way to unwind and de-stress. It provides a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life, allowing everyone to reconnect and recharge in a soothing environment.

At Wayfaring Pediatrics, we encourage you to make mealtime a priority for your family's health, happiness, and well-being. I am here to support you every step of the way on your journey towards a healthier and more connected family life. Remember, the simple act of gathering around the table can have profound benefits for your family's overall health and happiness.

Episode 25: Advocating for your child. Navigating the healthcare system.

Beth recently had the honor of speaking at the National Scleroderma Foundation Annual Conference, July 20-22 in Seattle, WA. Using her background as a Pediatrician, parent and person living with Scleroderma, she spoke to PARENTS of kids with Scleroderma at the "Kids Get Scleroderma Too" portion of the conference. She discussed the challenges navigating the healthcare system and how to advocate for your child and yourself when you have rare, complex, chronic disease.

In this episode we use her experience as a springboard to discuss strategies applicable for ALL parents to apply to their own kids - think constipation, headaches, belly pain, etc. The healthcare system is complex, fragmented and confusing. It is important that parents feel empowered to share the responsibility of managing their child's care.
