Earlier this month, our team gathered at the Friday Center in Chapel Hill to join the conversation on the future of mental health in North Carolina.

While our team has attended the Legislative Breakfast on Mental Health for several years, this was the first year we sponsored. While there, we connected with statewide legislators, DHHS representatives, and fellow advocates. It was a powerful morning dedicated to policy, partnership, and progress.

It was interesting to hear about Governor Josh Stein's recently signed Executive Order 33 that will strengthen North Carolina's behavioral health and criminal justice systems. It is our hope that this will help ensure individuals with complex communication and social-emotional needs are met with the specialized support they require.

It is vital that we continue showing up in these spaces to ensure the voices of our community are heard.

Meet Bryn Mbekenga (Baumann), Voices Together's newest Executive Assistant to the CEO!

As the EA to our Founder & CEO, Yasmine White, Bryn helps to coordinate high-level administrative support, communication with leadership, and day-to-day operations.

Fun fact: Bryn previously worked in the Executive Office at Bat Conservation International, a global nonprofit dedicated to conserving the world’s bats and their ecosystems! From her time with BCI living and working in multiple countries, Bryn has developed a sense of cultural awareness and adaptability which she brings to her work each day.

In her free time, Bryn loves to hike and spend time outside. Last year, she completed the Mammoth March with her mom, a 20-mile hike finished in eight hours or less! ⛰️

"By giving choices, we empower each child to become part of understanding what they need." - Autism and the Power of Music, by Yasmine White MT-BC.

We offer choices during our sessions that help participants respond with their intent, with their determination.

This understanding has helped many to gain their ability to advocate for what they need, which leads to a greater sense of control and self-esteem!

We kicked off the year making meaningful connections at this year's i2i Center for Integrative Health's Winter Conference!

At Voices Together, we believe that empowering individuals with neurodiversity requires a robust, collaborative ecosystem. Every year, i2i allows us to engage and connect with Medicaid leaders, I/DD experts, and fellow providers.

This year, we learned more about the EBCI Tribal Option and its model of care management. This informative session highlighted how care must be deeply rooted in culture and history. We also enjoyed learning about Vaya Health's Youth Partner program and the powerful role lived experience plays in peer mentorship.

Meaningful change happens through these conversations. We are so grateful to the i2i Center for hosting such a vital space for innovation and partnership!

Today we'd like to feature our Advisory Council Member, Philip Buchanan, PhD, FACMGG, a visionary leader who also served as our Board Chair until June 2023. As a medical geneticist and clinical cytogeneticist, he brings a unique, expert perspective that helps us better understand and serve the autism community.

Under Dr. Buchanan’s steady leadership, our organization reached milestones we once only dreamed of:

- Expanded Reach: We grew from serving 100 students in a single county to supporting over 1,600 children, teens, and adults across the entire state.

- Organizational Scaling: He guided us through a period of incredible growth, moving from a $250,000 budget to a $7 million budget.

- Strategic Partnerships: He was instrumental in securing a research partnership with Duke University and a major contract with the Division of Employment and Independence for People with Disabilities, ensuring our programs are evidence-based and sustainable.

- Resilience: Dr. Buchanan led us through the challenges of the pandemic, ensuring students never felt isolated by helping us transition to a virtual delivery model.

Phil, your dedication, expertise, and heart for service have helped us become the leader in helping neurodivergent individuals find the voice within themselves. We are so fortunate to have you as a part of the Voices Together family.

Thank you for everything you have done and still do on our behalf!

Our team had a wonderful time at this year's i2i Center for Integrative Health Winter Conference in Winston-Salem!

Presenting alongside Tom Wilson (IDD Network Development Director for Vaya Health), our Founder & CEO Yasmine White and Director of Clinical Services, Ezequiel Bautista, had the opportunity to share more about the ways in which our partnership with Vaya Health provides critical services and outreach to vulnerable populations across North Carolina through Voices Music Therapy (VMT™).

Swipe ➡️ to see more scenes from our presentation, as well our booth from the conference (shoutout to our Senior Development Coordinator, Bilal Muhammad!)

We had our Senior Director of Development & Strategic Partnerships, John Mitterling, on-site representing Voices Together at the 2025 Jingle and Mingle celebration!

Jingle and Mingle provides a fantastic spotlight for nonprofits throughout the area with the mission of using music and community to create joy while giving back, and Voices Together was grateful to be among their donation recipients to close out last year!

All proceeds from Jingle and Mingle events go directly toward helping families in need with meals, gifts, and essential household items. It was a privilege to gather with other community leaders to celebrate the season of giving.

A huge thank you to Shayla Taylor and Darnell Taylor for their generosity and for helping us continue to bring our Voices Music Therapy (VMT™) program to those who need it most. Thank you!

We are incredibly proud of our Board Chair, Dr. June StClair Atkinson for receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE®).

Dr. Atkinson is North Carolina's former and longest-serving State Superintendent of Public Instruction (2004-2017); from her days in office to serving on our Advisory Council--and now as our Board Chair--Dr. Atkinson has been a consistent advocate of Voices Together.

Throughout her education career, she has championed opportunities that empower students, elevate educators, and strengthen individuals' access to education pathways that truly make an impact.

Congrats, June, on this milestone moment! We are so fortunate to have you as the leader of our Board of Directors at this time of Voices Together's growth and expansion.
