Study to Explore Early Development - SEED 3 Research, Autism, Developmental Delays Most parents will receive a free developmental assessment for their child.

SEED 3 is a research study comparing children with autism and other developmental delays to children without these delays. Participating families will include children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, children with other developmental disabilities and children with no developmental disabilities, and their parents. All families will get incentives as a thank you for participating. SEED 3 will include

children who:
• Were born between January 2014 and December 2017 and are 2 1/2 to 5 years old at enrollment, and
• Were born in Alamance, Chatham, Davidson, Durham, Forsyth, Franklin, Guilford, Johnston, Nash, Orange, Person, Randolph, Rockingham, or Wake county and
• Currently live in one of the counties listed above and
• Speak and understand English

This study is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as part of the Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities Research and Epidemiology (CADDRE) Network. This network is composed of six research sites across the country. The North Carolina site is located at UNC Chapel Hill. During the first and second phases of SEED, the other sites participating were in California, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Together all sites enrolled approximately 7000 children 2 1/2 to 5 years old with North Carolina enrolling about 1350 children. During this third phase of SEED, two sites left the group and two new sites joined. For SEED 3, the other participating sites are in Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, Missouri, and Wisconsin. Together these sites will enroll approximately 3300 children 2 ½ to 5 years old with North Carolina enrolling about 600 children.

SEED stands for the Study to Explore Early Development. SEED is the largest epidemiological study to-date designed to compare children with autism and other developmental delays to children without these delays. Results from SEED will help researchers to better understand the health and behavior of young children with autism and to identify factors that contribute to autism.
