I don’t know if it’s just a Chapel Hill problem, but it seems like no one respects funeral processions anymore. Every week, we see drivers cutting through lines, refusing to yield, blowing, or speeding around vehicles that are clearly part of a funeral. It’s heartbreaking to watch grieving families have their loved one’s final ride treated like an inconvenience.
What’s even more disheartening is how little support we get from the local police. Most times, they only send one patrol car. Yes, one car to handle multiple intersections, busy roads, and impatient drivers. We’ve had moments where we’ve had to slam on our brakes or swerve just to avoid accidents during processions, all because there isn’t enough traffic control or respect for what’s taking place.
And yet, drive down Franklin Street and you’ll see plenty of officers standing around, chatting, laughing, and looking completely unbothered. I get that they have other duties, but where’s the compassion? Where’s the basic respect for the families who are grieving and just want to honor their loved one safely and with dignity?
Funeral processions shouldn’t have to fight for safety or respect. It’s disheartening to see how far that simple courtesy has fallen. I don’t think we’re asking for much.
Signed,
A frustrated funeral director 🙏🏾
