UNC Birth Partners

UNC Birth Partners Birth Partners is a group of volunteer doulas professionally trained to give support during labor. - What is a Doula?
(1)

A doula is a specially trained woman who helps other women during labor by providing continuous emotional and physical support throughout labor, birth, and the immediate postpartum period.

- How does a Doula help? There are many benefits to having a doula with you during labor. In addition to providing you with extra support, the doula is able to provide information to your other support people so that they know how to best help you, too. Recent research studies indicate that a woman who has a doula with her during labor is more likely to:
• Have a shorter labor
• Have a vaginal delivery
• Deliver without forceps
• Have more positive feelings towards her baby
• Have more positive memories of the birth
• Have less postpartum depression

Last night at our January Birth Partners meeting we announced the kickoff of Katherine’s Kindness Week. Katherine was a former UNC School of Nursing BSN student and doula who passed away in October 2021. She was passionate about women’s and reproductive health. The Katherine Acierno Nell Doula Scholars program was created in her honor. For the week of her birthday (January 20-24), we are supporting a platelet drive and fundraising for the doula scholars program. Visit the links in our bio or below to support Katherine’s Kindness Week! 🩵🤍

Our Story

What is a Doula? The word "doula" comes from a Greek word meaning “woman helper.” Today, a doula is a birth companion, trained to give physical, emotional, and informational support to women and families during labor and birth.

Research shows that when doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, and mothers are more satisfied with their experience. How does a Doula help? There are many benefits to having a doula with you during labor. In addition to providing you with extra support, the doula is able to provide information to your other support people so that they know how to best help you, too. Recent research studies indicate that individuals attended by a doula during labor are more likely to: • Have a shorter labor • Have a vaginal delivery • Deliver without forceps • Have more positive feelings towards her baby • Have more positive memories of the birth • Have less postpartum depression What is Birth Partners? Birth Partners is a volunteer doula program that provides care and support during labor and birth, free of charge at UNC Women's Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC. We have been supporting the women of North Carolina since 2001.
