Our Story
What is a Doula?
The word "doula" comes from a Greek word meaning “woman helper.” Today, a doula is a birth companion, trained to give physical, emotional, and informational support to women and families during labor and birth.
Research shows that when doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, and mothers are more satisfied with their experience.
How does a Doula help?
There are many benefits to having a doula with you during labor. In addition to providing you with extra support, the doula is able to provide information to your other support people so that they know how to best help you, too. Recent research studies indicate that individuals attended by a doula during labor are more likely to:
• Have a shorter labor
• Have a vaginal delivery
• Deliver without forceps
• Have more positive feelings towards her baby
• Have more positive memories of the birth
• Have less postpartum depression
