🧠Lewy body dementia can be confusing—but understanding it matters.
UNC neurologist Hannah Noah, MD, MPH, explains why Lewy body dementia is an umbrella term, how it differs from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease dementia, and what doctors look for when diagnosing it.
“These two conditions are very similar, but the difference is the onset of cognitive symptoms relative to motor symptoms,” Dr. Noah says.
Learn how this lesser-known form of dementia affects the brain—and why recognizing the signs early is important.

As Essential Tremor Awareness Month comes to a close, we reflect with gratitude on:
✅ The 100 patients treated through MRI‑guided Focused Ultrasound
âś… The families and caregivers who support them
✅ The clinical teams who continue to advance safe, incision‑less treatment options
âś… The researchers exploring new applications for focused ultrasound
This month reinforces why we continue to innovate: the need is great, the impact is immediate, and the future of tremor care is full of possibility.
One of the strengths of UNC’s program is its truly interdisciplinary model, bringing together:
âś… Functional neurosurgeons
âś… Movement disorder neurologists
âś… Biomedical imaging experts
This collaborative approach helps ensure that patients undergoing Focused Ultrasound receive comprehensive evaluation, testing, and post‑procedure support. UNC remains the only hospital in the country offering a dedicated interdisciplinary FUS clinic, making individualized tremor care more accessible and effective.
We’re honored to provide life‑changing treatment options during Essential Tremor Awareness Month — and every month.

March is Essential Tremor Awareness Month, a time to highlight one of the most common movement disorders. Essential tremor can significantly impact daily life — from writing and eating to performing routine tasks.
For patients who do not achieve adequate relief from medications, MRI‑guided Focused Ultrasound offers a non‑invasive option that precisely targets the area of the brain responsible for tremor. Many patients qualify if they have medication‑refractory tremor and are able to undergo MRI.
UNC is proud to support individuals with essential tremor through advanced, evidence‑based treatment options.
