Transition to Residency Bootcamp

Congratulations, Class of 2026! 🎉

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s Transition to Residency Curriculum a success. Our students had an incredible experience in the Surgical Performance Center, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the time, energy, and commitment of our faculty, staff, and residents.

Special recognition to Neal Murty, who ensured the skills labs ran seamlessly and was always ready to step in wherever needed.

Shoutout as well to the Division of CT Surgery for their immediate and enthusiastic support—stepping up within minutes to fill key roles in panels and skills sessions.

We’re especially grateful to the many contributors who gave their time to create a hands-on, comprehensive experience for what may be our largest group of matched surgical trainees to date—across General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, ENT, Plastics, and Urology.

With appreciation to:
Dr. Megan Campany, Dr. Trista Reid, Dr. Rachel Niehuus, Dr. Jaewon Lee, Dr. Katrina Dimaano, Dr. Josh Tennant, Dr. Kyle McNamara, Dr. Clint Cappiello, Dr. Sharon Kapeluk, Dr. Dan Calderon, Dr. Virginia Drake, Jess Werdel, Eli Maxwell, Dr. Alex Coward, Dr. Laritza Diaz, Dr. Gita Mody, Dr. Jinny Ha, Dr. Ursula Adams, Dr. Munee Kapadia, Dr. Erik Strungs, Dr. Sophie Gutterman, and Haley Schomburg.

Your support made a lasting impact on the next generation of surgeons.

We’re excited to continue growing and strengthening this program in the years ahead!

UNC Health now offers kidney transplants from donors with HIV to recipients with HIV, dramatically shortening wait times for carefully selected patients living with HIV. This progress builds on more than a decade of experience under the federal HIV Organ Policy Equity (HOPE) Act and UNC’s integrated expertise in HIV care, transplant nephrology, surgery and infectious diseases.

Dr. Adam Akerman and his team were featured in Nature Technologies to Watch 2026 for their groundbreaking work in blood-based detection of aortic aneurysms.

The team developed a faster and less invasive approach that combines blood analysis of molecular markers with AI-driven imaging data to predict aneurysm presence and even reconstruct the aorta from a single blood sample.

All interested to learn more or participate in trials can contact Dr. Adam Akerman directly at adam_akerman@med.unc.edu

This innovation could transform cardiovascular care, making early detection more accessible and personalized for people at risk. Learn how science and machine learning are coming together to save lives!

How a $35,000 Investment is Unlocking the Future of Surgery at UNC

The UNC SOM 2025-26 Research Infrastructure Equipment Allocation Award is bringing the QIAcube Connect to the UNC Department of Surgery—an automated workstation that standardizes nucleic acid and protein extraction and other sample preparation. By increasing throughput and reducing hands-on time, the system improves accuracy and reproducibility, helping move discoveries from the bench to the bedside faster.

This strategic investment from the School of Medicine’s Office of Research underscores UNC Surgery’s commitment to collaborative, innovative science that delivers for patients.
