Last week, our lab had the incredible opportunity to host Kathleen Rubins 🧬🚀

Dr. Rubins is both a NASA astronaut and microbiologist, with over 300 days spent in space, making her one of the top U.S. female astronauts in total time in orbit. She also made history by becoming the first person to sequence DNA in space.

We are grateful for the chance to hear about her unique career path and the intersection of science and space exploration. Thank you for sharing your experiences and inspiring the next generation of scientists.

📣 MHI SUMMER 2026 Applications Are Open

MHI SUMMER is a 10 week mentored cardiovascular research program at UNC Chapel Hill 🧬❤️ Students gain hands on lab experience, one on one mentorship, and career development support while working on meaningful cardiovascular research.

💰 Funding included
Selected students receive a $6,000 stipend plus a $3,000 allowance to attend the AHA Basic Cardiovascular Sciences Conference in Boston 🏙️🧪

Such an amazing day at PRISM, the Program for Research, Interviewing, and Scholarship Mentorship. PRISM hosted a graduate student panel coordinated by Kaitlin Blakemore and directed by Dr. Schisler. Current Ph.D., M.D., and M.D./Ph.D. students shared what their interview journeys were really like and gave our PRISM students honest, helpful advice as they prepare for their upcoming application cycles.

We are so grateful for our panelists and for Dr. Schisler’s leadership in building a program that truly supports students and opens doors for them.🩵🐏🥽🧪🐭👨‍🔬👩‍🔬🧑‍🔬

Big congratulations to Dr. Michael Fernandes de Almeida for receiving the Rebecca Clark Award for Moral Courage! 🎉

This award recognizes people who stand up for what’s right and lead with heart — and Dr. Almeida truly embodies that spirit every day.

He was celebrated on University Day (Oct 12) and will be recognized again at the Employee Forum Meeting on Nov 7. We’re so proud to celebrate his impact and leadership! 💙🐏
