OA Action Alliance

OA Action Alliance A national coalition promoting effective programs, policies and communication strategies to prevent and control osteoarthritis.

The Osteoarthritis Action Alliance (OAAA) was launched in 2011 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Arthritis Foundation to realize the mission and objectives outlined in the 2010 National Public Health Agenda for Osteoarthritis. In 2014, management of the OAAA was transferred to the Thurston Arthritis Research Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. We reconnected, we got social, and we're ready to take action. The OA Action Alliance strongly endorses and encourages regular physical activity, weight management, injury prevention and self-management education as proven strategies to maintain healthy joints and manage the symptoms of osteoarthritis.

Ever notice your joints feel stiffer when the weather changes? You’re not alone.

While weather doesn’t cause osteoarthritis, changes in temperature and air pressure may influence how symptoms feel for some people. Staying active, keeping joints warm, and listening to your body can help year-round.

Remember that "minor" ACL tear from your ski trip in college? Or that "badly sprained" ankle from the 5k five years ago?

While the scars have healed, the brace is gone, and the bruises have faded, your joints have a very long memory. In fact, about half of people who experience a significant joint injury will develop Osteoarthritis (OA) within 10 to 15 years.

It’s called Post-Traumatic OA, and it doesn't mean you did anything wrong—it just means your joint "suspension" was recalibrated.

The Good News: You aren't powerless! Understanding the link between past injuries and current aches is the first step toward protecting your mobility. Whether it's through targeted strength training or better movement habits, you can manage the "ghosts" of injuries past.

Imagine driving a car with no shocks. Every pebble feels like a boulder.

That’s what happens when we stop strengthening our muscles because of OA pain. Our muscles are our body’s internal shock absorbers. Without them, our joints take the full hit of every step we take.

Building strength with OA isn't about lifting 300lbs. It’s about:

Protecting your knees so you can crush those stairs. 🪜

Stabilizing your hips for that weekend walk. 🌳

Keeping your independence for years to come.

Drop a "💪" if you’re committed to staying strong this year!
