This past summer, Jesus Viña Moreno returned to the hospital in the Dominican Republic where his mother completed her residency when he was still a child. Viña arrived not as a visitor, but as a medical student; through the Office of Global Health Education and with support from an alumni donor fund, he spent five weeks building clinical skills and reconnecting with a place that shaped his earliest memories.

A summer global health rotation brought Jesus Viña Moreno back to his childhood hospital in the Dominican Republic, where he gained clinical skills and renewed confidence.

Brimming with pride today over Michael Zollicoffer, MD '85 and his service to the Baltimore community, his fight against cancer, and the hundreds of people who chipped in help. In his own words, "The world gave me a gift …To be here every day is a joy.”

“Folks came to save me,” said Dr. Michael Zollicoffer of the more than $280,000 raised to pay off his cancer treatment bills.

We join in honoring Jack Hughes, BA '39, CMED '41, who passed away last week. At the time of his passing, Dr. Hughes was one of the oldest-living veterans of the D-Day invasion at Normandy, where he served as a medical officer with the US Navy. Dr. Hughes was a urologist in Durham throughout his career and served as past president of the North Carolina Medical Society. He played a leading role in founding the North Carolina physician-owned HMO, later acquired by Cigna. He also served as an adjunct professor at the UNC School of Medicine.
