The Town of Chapin is heartbroken to share the passing of our beloved mayor, Albert “Al” R. Koon, Jr., who died on Friday, October 17, 2025, at Lexington Medical Center.

Mayor Koon was a lifelong son of Chapin, born here on July 23, 1951, to the late Albert Ray Sr. and Dorothy Stuart Koon. For 52 years, he shared an enduring love with his wife, Susan Keating Koon, building a family rooted in faith, service, and community.

Mayor Koon was not only a dedicated public servant—he was a man of deep faith, a devoted husband and father, and a true visionary who led with heart, integrity, and unwavering commitment to Chapin’s growth and well-being. His absence will be profoundly felt throughout our town.

As we grieve together, we invite our community to honor his memory:

Mayor Koon will lie in state at Chapin Town Hall on Monday, October 20, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, for those wishing to pay their respects.

The Koon family will receive friends that evening from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 21, at 11:00 AM at Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church, officiated by the Rev. Ron Philabaum. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

A full obituary will be shared once available. In the meantime, the community is encouraged to leave messages and share memories on Mayor Koon’s tribute page or through comments on the Town page.

The Town of Chapin extends our deepest condolences to the Koon family. We are grateful to Whitaker Funeral Home for their care and support during this difficult time.

Mayor Koon’s legacy will live on in every corner of Chapin he worked so hard to serve.
