📢 UPDATE 📢

on Medically Complex Children’s Wavier from the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

Self-directed children's attendant care is a home-based service for MCC waiver participants ages one to age 21. It allows the option for eligible parents, relatives or guardians to be paid hourly to deliver the extraordinary care their child needs for day-to-day activities. This option is self-directed and would be used instead of an in-home care agency and personal care aide (PCA).

Interested families who have a child who is covered by the MCC waiver can request the service now by contacting their waiver nurse case manager.

We LOVE using multisensory experiences during our therapy sessions. Why is this important?

🗣️ Helps Kids Remember What They Learn

When children use more than one sense—like seeing, hearing, and touching—they’re more likely to remember what they’ve learned. This is especially helpful in speech therapy, where kids are learning new sounds, words, and ways to communicate.

🗣️ Supports All Kinds of Learners

Every child learns in their own way. Some do best by seeing things, others by hearing, and some by doing hands-on activities. Multisensory learning includes all of these, making it easier for every child to understand and grow their communication skills.

🗣️ Keeps Kids Interested and Focused

Learning that’s fun and interactive keeps kids more engaged. When children are enjoying an activity, they’re more likely to pay attention—and that leads to better learning of language!

Some examples of multisensory experiences include sensory boxes, touch ‘n’ feel books, musical puzzles as well as crafts.

What are environmental sounds? Environmental sounds are common sounds created by common objects such as animal sounds (woof woof), vehicle sounds (beep beep), and explanations (woah, uh-oh). These sounds are often fun for little kids to imitate and motivating to keep them engaged with a language activity. Ask your therapist for more ideas on different environmental sounds to model and ways to encourage imitation!

We 💗 celebrating Valentines with all of our little loves this week! Sensory boxes are such an engaging way to provide a multisensory experience during speech therapy. Some of their benefits include

🗣️ Practice labeling new vocabulary including verbs, nouns, adjectives, etc.

🗣️ Increasing attention span while engaging in play with others

🗣️ Creating a fun and motivating environment to request assistance to complete a task such as turning a wind up toy

🗣️ Comprehending WH questions such as, “Where is the heart?”

🗣️ Modeling fun words like, “oh no! Whee! Boom!” to encourage imitation

And many more! Let’s be honest…the “adults” have just as much fun creating and exploring a sensory box as the children do!
