FCMC is pleased to announce the acquisition of SMS Physical Therapy, effective January 1, 2026! 👏

This milestone follows more than 50 years of SMS Physical Therapy sharing space and serving patients within FCMC, reflecting a long-standing partnership rooted in collaboration, trust, and community-focused care.

Patients will continue to receive care from the same trusted therapists they know, supported by care teams that have worked closely together for years.

“For more than five decades, SMS Physical Therapy has been an integral part of care delivery within our hospital,” said Dawnett Willis, CEO of Floyd County Medical Center.

“Bringing SMS fully into the FCMC family formalizes a partnership that has long served our patients well. This structure allows us to further align physical, occupational, and speech therapy services and naturally complements the continued growth of our orthopedic and sports medicine services—ensuring patients experience consistent, high-quality care from diagnosis through recovery.”

When patients visit their primary care provider, sometimes the provider will refer them to another medical specialty to address their particular health needs.

Healthcare professionals known as the “referral specialists” handle these behind-the-scenes transactions at hospitals and clinics.

FCMC has a small but mighty referral team – Lisa Mulvey, Kelly Schmidt, and Kathy Haus.

In our next installment of "A Day in the Life" series, you can learn more about this important behind-the-scenes work by reading the blog below!

Despite the joy of the holidays, our health information management (HIM) team wants to remind everyone to stay on alert against scammers.

Here are some quick tips to keep in mind:

📍 Be cautious of phone calls coming from non-local area codes.

❌ If the caller begins to ask for important personal information – such as your name, address, date of birth, credit card number, etc. – it may be a sign that this is not a legitimate phone call from FCMC.

☎️ If you are not sure if the person on the phone actually works at FCMC, ask for the caller’s name and then call FCMC’s mainline (641-228-6830) and request to speak to that team member.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call us and ask to speak to a member of our HIM team for assistance.

FCMC is proud to employ more than 300 phenomenal team members.

One of those individuals is Melissa Johnston of the patient access team, who has used her free time outside of work to crochet newborn hats for the birth center.

To date, she has already donated 20 handmade beanies for FCMC’s smallest patients.

And considering that she is a Christmas baby herself, Melissa’s latest crocheted creations have proven a special way for her to extend love and support to other newborns who have arrived during the holidays.

“Melissa is a great reflection of the kind of people we have on our team,” said Bree Schultz, patient access and prior authorization manager at FCMC.

“She embodies the generosity and community-minded spirit we strive for every day. Her willingness to give back speaks volumes about her character. Acts like this remind us that compassion and kindness are at the heart of what we do.”

FCMC is grateful to have team members like Melissa who go above and beyond to care for every patient who comes to our hospital 💙
